In this crowded market where can you hear Sporadic E or Tropo skip?

Hi, I signed up for FMLIST.ORG, am getting the propagation alerts and trying FM-DX, but we have lots of strong local signals in this metro, and I haven't heard anything out of the ordinary, even though the e-mail alerts are firing off yesterday and today. Are there frequencies FM-DXers here camp on in hopes of hearing DX? I don't have an SDR with a waterfall display (yet), so I have to scan by hand. Radios are Sangean HDR-14 and whip, or Tecsun PL-330 and my external antenna is my 20 ft high gutter downspout, which is not going to be anything like resonant, a good match, or a good pattern at 88-108 mHz, but it does help noticeably for weak locals. TNX.

I only got e-skip around 7 pm last night but haven’t checked this morning. Inside the metro is a lot harder with strong HD signals. You might want to try getting over a translator or LPFM. The HDR-14 is really good getting a station over another station. I don’t camp on frequencies but for me 93.9, 94.9, and 95.3 are pretty open for me. 88.1 is good for eskip but probably not for you

I'm gonna program these in and step between them... 93.9, 94.9, and 95.3 and two more, HDR-14 has 5 in a page as you know. Excellent little radio. Do you alligator clip an antenna to it?

"You might want to try getting over a translator or LPFM" - do you really think they are as low-powered as they claim? 92.5 104.5 OMG

I get some pretty good skip up here on the north side of town… lots of stuff from Louisiana, even got out as far as Charlotte, NC with HD pilot a couple weeks ago. Just using the factory tuner/antenna on a 2020 Chevy truck, and 2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee.
