On the front page of the sports, you can see the media interviewing the Rhino's new coach. Mike Catalano from Channel 13 is holding the 13 microphone AND the Channel 8 microphone. I have never seen anything like this. I don't work in media so I don't know. I am not bashing WROC, these boards have done enough of that, but where in the heck was John Kucko and Thad brown?! This was a big sports story for Rochester and WROC allowed someone from a rival station to hold their mic? How sad.

"I have never seen anything like this. I don't work in media so I don't know."

Obviously you don't work in the media. This happens quite frequently with sports stories and sometimes, although not as much, with news stories.

Ok, so I don't work in media like I stated, so this is something new to me. But like I asked before, where was WROC's talent at the time?

It may be that 8 had just sent a photog and no reporter. This happens often, not just with 8 but with everyone in town, and it's just common courtesy among colleagues that we'll grab the other guy's mike if need be.

Behind the scenes, most of us all get along quite well, believe it or not.

Very often, the talent gets boxed out by the photographers and they need someone to hold their microphone.

You don't work in news, yet you call yourself "Newscool"?

Here's a question: Why do people who are not in the business care so much about the most meaningless things when it comes to working in TV? Believe me there are a lot more interesting things "TV News wannabees and has beens" can gossip about when it comes to the inside world of broadcast journailsm, that will impress your friends and family a lot more than why sometimes one person holds the mikes during a press conference!!!

Those of us who are actually in the news business will tell you it's common courtesy to hold someone's mike and it happens routinely. Take it from someone who's worked in cities where people would sell out their own mother for a story, reporters and photographers are very very lucky to work in a town with that kind of cooperation!!!!

Boy, did I touch a nerve with you, didn't I?! You must work at channel 8? Why else would you call yourself "SNOOZENEWS"
I am not coming back to these idiotic boards anymore! I can't engage in a simple discussion without getting smart ass comments back! You people act like I insulted your mother or something! Listen channel 8 employee, I am sorry your station is in last place, but don't take it out on me! Tell the GM to stop firing people, maybe your station will get viewers!
Peace out, sensitive miserable people!

I don't feel that any question asked is "meaningless". There's no way to finding out an answer to a question if it never gets asked. Us young folks who aspire to someday be a part of the television business look up to you older guys to guide us and give us the answers to these "stupid questions". I do not, nor have I ever worked in television news, yet I run my own website about it. I suppose that takes away my credibility since I am just a "wannabe".

Newbies, Wannabes, and Has-beens Welcome

Perhaps it wasn't the original question, but the attached accusation that provoked a negative response.

NOBODY, in or out of the business, knows EVERYTHING. Open discussion educates everyone - grizzled veterans and interested outsiders alike. Sometimes those inside the business forget how myopic their viewpoint is in terms of the real world, and need to be reminded that they serve the consumer, not the other way around. Sometimes those outside the business don't understand why things happen the way they do in the broadcasting world, and need to understand the technical, moral, professional, and commercial considerations that impact decisions by local broadcasters.

If you make a smart-ass remark, expect to get a smart-ass answer in return. If you ask a legitimate question, expect legitimate - and usually well-thought-out answers in return. Expect variances in opinion, because you know that opinions are like _ssholes - everybody has one...

Most of all, this is a DISCUSSION board. Try not to take it - or yourself - too seriously.
