IN YOUR OPINION??????

What if any are stations in Eastern NC who are underachieving or simply a waste of a decent signal???Who could be doing more with what they have in your view????? I am very interested in seeing what you think..

Allen

In regards to a signal that is wasted, 94.3 would be one of those, it's a good thing WTIB is moving to 103.7 on March 15th,
Inner Banks Media LLC should have done this when this station went on the air, and took 94.3 and sold them to, maybe,
Pirate Radio LLC, which could have moved the 1250 signal here, a Sports Talk station on FM might work in the backyard of
ECU, i'm sure WGHB would like to do this, if not maybe WNCT-AM could switch to FM with new call letters, i'm sure Allen
would like "beach music" to be here.
Other stations with a wasted signal, WEED in Rocky Mount, why are they even attempting to do a "Old School" urban format
on 1390?, this is a heritage AM that could be put to better use, but that won't happen until Northstar Broadcasting sells it.
Another one is WRMT on 1490 here, ESPN Sports with only 1000 watts?, First Media LLC should consider taking it silent, drop
the format and call letters at 99.3, and stick Sports here.
There are many more stations in Eastern North Carolina who are wasting their signal, many only 1000 watts on AM, and yes,
even those who are 5000 watts, i wonder how many of those will apply for a FM translator?
Now that i've gotten this converstation started, feel free to add your comments.

Agreed that WEED in Rocky Mount AND WRMT's resources could be better used. Old School on WEED (IMHO) is really not a bad idea. Foxy plays Old School. However, what I am hearing on WEED is a little more progressive than what is on Foxy. However, they'll go from 'Double Dutch Bus' to 'Do You Know The Way To San Jose?' without even a mumble between the two songs. I believe if some real energy went into WEED, it could make a small dent in the market (at least). I think it's a matter of not doing it just like an FM station does it. If including RUN DMC works - do it, if no rap and all Roberta Flack and Freddie Jackson works - do it, or if playing The Platters and James Brown works - do it. They just have to be unique.

As for WRMT, even for one kilowatt, it's a weak signal. But, 1490 is probably the worst of the old AM 'local channels' (1230, 1240, 1340, 1400, 1450, 1490). I think for anything to work on WRMT, it has to be very local and very polished!

Sports may be a better fit for 99.3. DP there is a great, very talented and dedicated guy. They're format is better than it was in past months. However, .8-2.0 isn't really many listeners. I expected to see this station finally emerge, but they are having a tough go of it.

Small towns with 4 Christian stations (and I enjoy Christian radio) is rather dumb, too. I realize much of that is due to translators and such. However; 2 local Southern Gospel stations, 3 Contemporary Christian stations, 2 AM Urban Gospel local signals, and one 'traditional' Christian station...you get the picture.

I believe the industry I love must return to the basics; polished, wider music formats, more live and local (when possible). If a station must replace a live and local personality with automation...the automated programming must be done in a way that does not forsake local information and flavor. I know of one very personality-based, Hot AC station that went through lots of corporate lay offs. Now, it airs a syndicated morning show (but, it's been there and doing well for years), live PM drive...everthing is automated...no voice tracks, no PSAs, canned weather, etc. So, it's a jukebox with commercials 15 hours per day and 24 hours per day on weekends.

There are many on this board that believe the same way (about returning to basics). Now that stations are having to air 5 minute (plus) stop sets to pay the bills, this is even more important. What will it ever take for the real movers and shakers to realize this!? Giving the listeners what they want and need is more important that HD FM.

All that said, there ARE plenty stations doing it the right way. One example is another First Media Station...99.5 in Emporia, VA. They are airing a format that was previously not available in their service area. They are always out and about, they are live a good part of the day, and (though it's not my music) the format is well done. CJ has done a great job there!

You are on the money Mr.Lewis.....DP is a good guy...99.3 could be so much more..I hate hearing Big Dawg jocks on Dawg and then next hour they are Tracked on 99.3..Believe me the listeners pick up on that stuff..I know some of it is ecomonics but you have to have some 99.3 only employees if its ever gonna really make a dent

I agree with you Allen. But when you have a station that has zero overhead and makes some money management loves that. Granted the focus is always on the higher powered stations there while the lower powered ones just seem to "get by" as if they were afterthoughts. What 99.3 needs not only on-air people is someone who can concentrate solely on that one station rather than trying to do two others. DP is a great guy, but he has his hands full with many other duties and therefore can't possibly give the station the attention it deserves.. But then again I have been laid off from there since October so I haven't a clue as to how things are there now. I would deeply love to come back and do more on-air there at 99.3 and I keep praying that that will happen soon. We will see..

Just an FYI on ESPN at WRMT. I made that change back in 2003 when I was the only full timer left after a series of firings/demotions/walk-outs. It was before First Media took over...it was just me with one part time jock and 2 part time sports board ops. I had my hands full trying to keep WSAY (now Big Dawg) running and needed to do something with WRMT that would be easy to just let run. We were doing a mix of news, talk, and sports, and I was having to switch satellite receivers, patch cords, recordings, etc., and it was an easy fix. I'm surprised First Media hasn't done something else with it by now. (I left in '05)

I wonder how much longer WRMT can sustain as a station?, surely moving the sports format to FM would be a good move, but the question is whether or not "First Media Radio" would be willing to take this gamble?, and keep in
mind another FM has plans for this area at 103.1, and my first thoughts were before Capitol Broadcasting sold the
CP to Pinestone Media that 103.1 was going to be used to extend the 99.9 signal in the Triangle, meaning ESPN
radio would move here and chances are WRMT could have been sold or change formats, to either talk or spanish.
