Agreed that WEED in Rocky Mount AND WRMT's resources could be better used. Old School on WEED (IMHO) is really not a bad idea. Foxy plays Old School. However, what I am hearing on WEED is a little more progressive than what is on Foxy. However, they'll go from 'Double Dutch Bus' to 'Do You Know The Way To San Jose?' without even a mumble between the two songs. I believe if some real energy went into WEED, it could make a small dent in the market (at least). I think it's a matter of not doing it just like an FM station does it. If including RUN DMC works - do it, if no rap and all Roberta Flack and Freddie Jackson works - do it, or if playing The Platters and James Brown works - do it. They just have to be unique.
As for WRMT, even for one kilowatt, it's a weak signal. But, 1490 is probably the worst of the old AM 'local channels' (1230, 1240, 1340, 1400, 1450, 1490). I think for anything to work on WRMT, it has to be very local and very polished!
Sports may be a better fit for 99.3. DP there is a great, very talented and dedicated guy. They're format is better than it was in past months. However, .8-2.0 isn't really many listeners. I expected to see this station finally emerge, but they are having a tough go of it.
Small towns with 4 Christian stations (and I enjoy Christian radio) is rather dumb, too. I realize much of that is due to translators and such. However; 2 local Southern Gospel stations, 3 Contemporary Christian stations, 2 AM Urban Gospel local signals, and one 'traditional' Christian station...you get the picture.
I believe the industry I love must return to the basics; polished, wider music formats, more live and local (when possible). If a station must replace a live and local personality with automation...the automated programming must be done in a way that does not forsake local information and flavor. I know of one very personality-based, Hot AC station that went through lots of corporate lay offs. Now, it airs a syndicated morning show (but, it's been there and doing well for years), live PM drive...everthing is automated...no voice tracks, no PSAs, canned weather, etc. So, it's a jukebox with commercials 15 hours per day and 24 hours per day on weekends.
There are many on this board that believe the same way (about returning to basics). Now that stations are having to air 5 minute (plus) stop sets to pay the bills, this is even more important. What will it ever take for the real movers and shakers to realize this!? Giving the listeners what they want and need is more important that HD FM.
All that said, there ARE plenty stations doing it the right way. One example is another First Media Station...99.5 in Emporia, VA. They are airing a format that was previously not available in their service area. They are always out and about, they are live a good part of the day, and (though it's not my music) the format is well done. CJ has done a great job there!
