In your Opinion??

Someone started this topic in the Eastern NC Forum, I thought it sould be interesting to see what folks in this forum think:

What stations in Western NC that are underachieving or simply a waste of a decent signal???

Who could be doing more with what they have in your view??

Also how about stations sitting on a Gold mine but refusing to mine it?? (I know several of those!)

Opinions and facts both welcome.

Now that little piece was about as "around the world" as one can be. If you have an opinion put it out there so people have an opportunity to respond. I'm not into prospecting. Rumors still floating around about WTHZ in Greensboro changing formatic to religion and that would leave somebody with an opportunity.

I have little idea what the public wants on the airwaves John...
But I do find it suprising that some AM's program the computer for one song after another with little or no banter in between. It seems to me that with IPods, and sites like Pandora, you could do that on your own and have better results. I am guessing that those stations that program like that are just barely surviving. Some of the satellite services do offer a good alternative to that type of programming.
But, I have decided I am way out of touch...and I am often wrong...so...

I think the lack of personality is what is killing radio. Just as AM couldn't compete with FM when it came to playing music, jukebox stations can't compete with an iPod where an individual's choice of music can be fine-tuned. The two things radio (should) have going for it is 1. it is LIVE (read NOT voice-tracked as we do things now) and 2. it is LOCAL (not satellite-programmed). I know that the chain stations don't want to go either route due to economic and/or control issues, but I truly think that if Clear Channel and these other folks want to survive they must get back to these two tenets or else radio becomes irrelevant and frequencies become available for auction by the FCC. Who knows? Maybe that is the grand plan after all...

As for the "goldmine," I think Dave Lingafelt should abandon Charlotte and do the regional thing like WKBC does (but without the satellite). If he had personalities and a tight sound, he could print money selling from Asheville to Winston-Salem.

Good point about Dave and The Ride! However he has an opportunity right in his grasp but do not think money is the object of his passion for radio. There is a growing force in this country with really good Classic Hits / Oldies stations and Dave has that option right now. Look around the country and see the growth of these kind of stations. While this Charlotte market is wide open for such a format there is nobody on the horizon that is willing to take the plunge. Z730 is am AM station and can rattle some cages but will not have an impact on the market with the quality of programming and the quality of their signal. Quality of signal is not the AM part, it is the engineering. Their sound is muddy and not real crisp, flip between WBT and Z730 and you will see what I mean. Before you jump on the power and frequency thing I do realize there is a huge difference.

My opinion is my musical tastes are not like the masses. I'm tired of some of the same songs that get played over and over. Others I could hear every day and not tire of them. I want personality in more than just AM drive. I find radio to be less relevant every day. I don't feel that connection anymore that radio used to be so good at.

I miss the old "Free Form" style of radio where the jocks were allowed to freely pick from a select variety of music. Not only does this allow the jock's personality come through but it allows for some pretty neat surprises here and there. "Progressive" radio stations like WRPL in Charlotte, WGOE in Richmond and KPIG in San Fran come to mind.

Believe it or not you can add WBT to that list. I had a free hand in the music I played overnight and on the weekend. Not Progressive radio but certainly not the same old formula around today.
