Poll Question: In your view, Who's Sports Talk's Rush Limbaugh? And Why?

Poll Candidates:
  • Jim Rome (Premiere)
  • Dan Patrick (ESPN)
  • Tony Bruno (SNR)
  • Colin Cowherd (ESPN)
  • Chris Myers (FSR)
  • JT The Brick (FSR)
  • Todd Wright (SNR)
  • Mike and Mike (ESPN)
  • Other Sports Talk Host

You can define the criteria however you want (e.g. most affiliates, most entertaining, most well-known, etc) - just list what your criteria was in making the selection.

Mike and/or Mike (they're only on the air together about 1/2 the time it seems) are the most entertaining, but I'll have to go with Rome as the Limbaugh of sports.

Why? He's the franchise for (mostly) Clear Channel sports stations and the main reason they exist in the first place. Just like if Rush wasn't on the air, many news/talk stations would switch formats, especially the CC-owned conservative-oriented ones. Both their acts are getting old and tired, but CC-owned Premiere syndicates them, so CC-owned talk & sports stations will have them as their top priority.

Just my opinion.

Since I posed the question, I'll give my answer, as well.

As of today, I'd put Jim Rome because of his affiliate count and name recognition (including ESPN TV show).

But I think in 5-10 years, it'll be Colin Cowherd hands down. Colin is younger, far more entertaining and interesting, attracts a younger demo audience, and frankly is just a head above the rest of the competition.

I'd go with Rome for the same reasons mentioned earlier. Like Limbaugh, Rome is the anchor of many CC sports talk stations.

By the way, Rome and Cowherd are around the same age. Both are in their early 40s.....

Really? I thought he looked a bit older - guess not.

When I think Limbaugh I think host garnering a huge loyal following by articulating their agenda. Works on a national politics where there is a huge base of people who agree and want to hear the word.

In national sports talk there is no singular commonality of beliefs. So I don't think anyone nationally is anything like Limbaugh.

JT comes close. There was a weekend guy on TSN that played similar elements.

In St Louis there is a guy named Slaton on 590 the Fan who does a Limbaugh-like act.

I'll also go with Jim Rome. Because of his daytime schedule (which isn't interrupted very often by live sporting events) and a large number of affiliates, there is more clearance time. I don't know how his ratings stack up against other hosts and if the numbers are accurate, but I've heard Rome say a couple of times that he has two million listeners.

Bigtalkradiofan said he thinks Colin Cowherd will be the Rush Limbaugh of sports talk radio. I think Colin's good, but one thing that could be holding him back is Pacific Time clearance. Being on from 7-10a PST, I suspect that a large number of West Coast ESPN affiliates (particularly in the bigger markets) are airing local morning programming during much, if not all, of the show.

Cowherd is on from 6-10 here in Los Angeles. He has a "West Coast Hour" from 6 to 7 so his show will fit into a traditional morning show timeframe. Most ESPN affilates on the West Coast, with the exception of KNBR San Francisco, broadcast most of the ESPN feed. The majority of ESPN affiliates are owned by ABC.

stljohn is right .. there is no comparable person in sports radio! In additions to the previously stated reasons, there is NO sports host or network that comes close in ratings, numbers of listeners, or number of successful stations. May of the all sports stations on the air today and "also ran" AMs in medium and small markets!

I'll admit that I'm not familiar with all of the candidates listed given the limitations of my market, but I'd think you'd have to put in a vote for Rome. When it comes to a dedicated following, not just ratings, Rome takes it. Evidenced by the tour stops that draw oodles, and the fact that he has the "clones" (much like whatever it is that Rush calls his listeners that I cannot recall but is on the tip of my tongue.)

If you have to ask (and provide a list), then there isn't one.
