Maybe it wasn’t the original intent but recently the Orlando board got into a discussion of the “DJ’s DJ” – Dan Ingram of the old WABC music glory days. When Dan was on the air on July 4th he would open his show with a quote from Winston Churchill to really put the holiday in proper perspective.
“It has been said Democracy is the worst form of government except all the others that have been tried.”
There was a time that guy on the radio was like your older, wiser bro or best friend. Dan actually inspired me to learn more about Winston Churchill and I did. Simply, he was such a great and courageous man and leader to so many. He gave many people hope when life itself appeared hopeless.
I realize I walk a very fine line embracing history as I do and looking at the world a little differently than most to include the business of radio. Some of you will probably never really understand my messages as it’s easy to dismiss it all as my wanting to live in the past. I look at the past to celebrate greatness and learn from mistakes. I believe it better prepares you for the future and that should be a part of any business strategy.
As I think of the courage of Winston Churchill I am reminded of a time when leaders made bold, decisive decisions without the aid of a public opinion poll or a focus group. There was a time too for radio, talent was considered an asset and not a liability. I really wonder if what we see around us is really progress. Yesterday seemed a lot easier and maybe that's a normal perception.
Jacksonville has a lot going for it and we have still have many really talented and dedicated people on the air who make the best of very restrictive circumstances. Typical of most holidays, many people will use the day an excuse to get wrecked. To me, independence and freedom from the status quo are things really worth celebrating.
Have a happy and safe Independence Day!
