Talk about an old man of radio....I'll be retirement eligible in 3 years! Seeing words like Night Action, Larry Henry and Sam Simmermaker (as well as you, Bob) brings back a lot of memories. I thought Jim Kauper was a class act (even if he did have to let me go because of budget problems in 1982). I saw Larry Henry a couple of times when I visited Detroit on business in the 1980s (he's done very well in the radio business). I saw someone post something about Jay Baker.....I saw him while doing some free-lance work at the Speedway in the 1980s for WCSI and we had a good time...Jay's a class act. I haven't made a living in radio for 25 years but I loved working in the business in that era.....not sure I would want to do it again in the present state of the industry. Seeing names like Bob and Chuck Larson bring back lots good memories. And yes, it's true, I am a bona-fide federal government employee. But thanks for the stroll down memory lane.....they are some great memories.
I think I heard you bending format and playing some of Harry Chapin's WOLD http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aZuUoZUL9xQ&feature=related on Night Action at least once. That song always seemed like a good argument for a steady day job and a weekend radio job.
I really enjoyed you on the air and at the time I was in high school. I never got to hear the WSMJ broadcasts but listened to WCSI. I didn't have the cool Arvin bike radio but was able to use bolts and metal to connect a radio to my bike. Later lsot interest when my gas guzzling big engine car had only an am radio and later an fm converter.
I am not in commercial radio these days but still enjoy non com radio. Here in Greenfield we hope to have WSMJ back onthe air sometime late this year or early next year. WSMJ 89.1.
Give Woody my best! He visited here and it wasn't too painful.
WXLW is not listed for the second book in a row. I imagine they won't appear again, since a large portion of their programming is simulcast on WFDM-FM.
WXLW has disappeared from the ratings, but I don't think it is because of simulcast. Isn't WXLW still all sports and WFDM all talk? I know WFDM airs some sports like the Cubs. What is being simulcast?
