You pretty much answered your own question here.

I don't know this from personal experience, but I'll agree with you based on what I've heard from friends who pop into gay clubs from time to time just to get an earful of some dance music in a club setting. I was a bit surprised to learn that hiphop was getting a lot of play in the gay clubs, but given it's mainstream popularity... I suppose it shouldn't be a surprise at all.

Dance was HUGE in the early 90's. Hiphop was still a growing genre, and the big hair metal fad was in it's waning days. The techno/house movement was fresh, hip, edgy, and sort of symbolized the technology revolution that was beginning to take place at the time. We've certainly seen dance hit a low cycle here in the states over the past 2 or 3 years, but one sort of senses that it's beginning to trend upward again (finally). I'm thankful for mediums like the internet & satellite radio that have made it a lot easier to stay in tune in what's happening in dance music even though it's not been mainstream in a while... if I'd had to rely solely on local radio, I'd have lost my mind by now.
