Indianapolis Highway Radio Station Question.

I am going to be traveling through Indianapolis next week I was wondering if someone
could tell me if there are any highway information stations on AM 530 or 1610, or if they
are elsewhere on the dial. This is more of a research project for me, for my station.

We are looking for something like this for a backup while we do some needed tower
work, to see if it would be viable for us. I've studied a couple of good stations in Ohio,
and since I'm in Indianapolis I'd like to see how there set up and how far they can be heard
clearly.

I'm looking for the TIS stations(non-commercial). I can't find the info I want on the INDOT
site.

Thank You for your help!

I'm not sure about the Indy area, but here is one in Columbus.
The transmitter is on I-65 at the 72 Mile Marker, and it's range covers frm the 66 MM to the 83 MM.
Very llimited bandwidth, though.

There are at least a couple of these in the Indy metro, but they rarely seem to have any useful information on them. Unless it's been recently changed, it's usually some non topical traffic info running on a loop.

Speaking of TIS stations, does anyone remeber before the expanded band, when Dallas/Ft Worth airport had departures on 1630KHz and arrivals in 1680KHz?
Even thought they only broadcast with 65 watts (how did they get 65 watts on a TIS station, anyway?) you coupld plainly hear then all over north America.
I heard them almost nightly here in Central Indiana and read reports that they were heard all over.
I know those upper channels lend themselves to propogation, but 900 mles on 65 watts?
Anyone else ever hear them?

I heard these DFW broadcasts many times here in Central KY before the extended band got populated with new stations. Just for everyone's information, ham radio operators use 1800-2000 khz (160 Meter Band) which is just slightly higher than the 1680 mentioned, oftentimes with powers even LESS than 85 watts to make contacts even farther out. In fact, I have talked to other hams in all 50 states and dozens of foreign countries (including Morocco) using powers between 50 and 500 watts from my home station's wire antennas on the 160 meter band.

If a frequency in this range is clear, a little power can go a long way at night....
