INDIANA'S small market "champs"

In terms of small market stations with a big sound, I'll put my vote in for WQLK in Richmond. Their sister station, WHON, also seems to hold its own even with WLW down the road.

As for stations that still fully serve their communities of license, I'd go with WLKI in Angola.

I think the best small market station in Indiana is unquestionably the FM station in Winchester.
And without a doubt, that was one of the best April Fool's jokes this year. Good job Herschel...

I'm not joking. Winchester, county seat of Randolph county, home of Wick's Pies
and Anchor Glass, the county hospital is there, it's small town USA and Winchester's radio station is the best in the state as far as small market radio is concerned.

So good that you'd think they were broadcasting from Richmond.

Wait a minute... :p
Last I heard, this station operates from Richmond with a live morning show & automated voice tracking the rest of the day. A lot can change since I last heard them. Please educate us about what makes them the best Small Town Champ...

WERK was a small station with a big market attitude, and it deserves some pretty big props for what it accomplised. The jocks, especially those early on in the stations history like Mark Mcklor (sp?) etc.

That was Mark McClure aka: "Marvelous Mark" who later dropped the F bomb at Windy 1260 in Indy about thirty years ago.

PG in Portland was great when Brandon bought it off of Glenn West in '74. Wonder what became of Glenn and his wife afterwards? Brandon still used that homebrew EBS receiver West built with the alarm clock bell...kinda quirky but it worked.

PG is still a homebrew station since Ron Weaver bought it....some current A/C music mixed with hourly news, farm news and talk....similar to Tiffin,Ohio's WTTF.

I will cast a vote for WSAL/WLHM in Logansport...AM 1230 and 102.3 FM. Both stations are very strong on local news, local talk and community service. Both stations have good signals and broadcast High School sports. They super serve their community of license...not the norm these days.

Around 1977, WNDE ran an announcement from the GM saying that Marvelous Mark recently made a statement on WNDE that he (the GM) considered in very poor taste, along with his assurance that this would never happen again. I always assumed that it was a stunt to get people talking about Marvelous Mark (who was a remarkable screamer). Was there a connection between this announcement and the F bomb incident about which you speak?

I withdraw my comment on WSAL-WLHM in Logansport. Since Mid-America bought them..News has gone downhill fast!! Sorry about that!

Didn't the News guy at WLHM pass away in 2009? Did they not replace him?

I don't think MAX 96.7FM Anderson and 93.5(??)FM Muncie sounds too bad. Even though they use the "Monster Truck Jam voice MAX" bumpers a lot, they still have local, live talent that sounds alright. Also seem to be running a couple nice local music promotions; anyone know if Backyard is making any money here? Don't seem to have much advertising on the air. :-\

The title small market champ goes to the Flying Dutchman according to the Indiana Broadcasters
Association.

I think Bruce Quinn has put more small market stations on the air than anyone else. He deserves
the award. Congrats to Bruce and his family at WMRS!
