"Indonesia’s broadcasting goes digital"

"The national team from the Office of the State Minister of Communications and Information is conducting a digital standard trial test for radio by implementing the U.S. IBOC system (In Band On Channel) and Europe’s DAB (Digital Audio Broadcasting) in Jakarta and Surabaya. The IBOC trial had better audio quality — there is no interference between frequency and the frequency channel on its side,” Lily explained. For the DAB trial, equipment and transmitter devices for DAB are expected to arrive in Jakarta in the middle of December 2006." :-\

In case it's escaped your notice, ALL media is going "digital"...tv, radio, "print" (text), telecommunications, everything. Digital modes are more efficient (though not necessarily more robust). Digital modes allow more information to be transmitted in the same spectral space (more audio or video channels, higher resolution for the same number of channels, extra services such as text/paging/etc>) They (digital modes) are the future...in ALL media (though I believe analog radio will co-exist with digital in this country probably for the rest of my lifetime...I'm 48. I HOPE SO...I collect old radios! I also hope so because analog modes, particularly on AM, are FAR more robust...which could be the difference between life and death in an emergency...say a Tornado warning NOT HEARD because after the switch to digital, the AM station's signal didn't reach out far enough! NOT acceptable!

Digital radio has failed in Canada, and there is no interest in the US, with HD Radio - digital does not necessarily mean better (look at the crappy digital cell phones, with poor sound quality and constantly dropping calls).
