Indy 88.1 FM now testing...

Indy 88.1 is now testing with Rick Astley on repeat and a message that the station signs on in 7 days...
Meanwhile their website is still in "Demo stream" mode...

How much power are these folks operating on? I'll give them a shot, but I've got Perth ON's CHLK and Cape Vincent NY's WSLZ on that frequency.

They stream! ----> http://indie.streamon.fm/

Thank you for the link, Yezi, but there's always something magical about grabbing fringe (and beyond) stations OTA! :)

As noted by EJM, a pending increase to 4 kW is in the works, which could make a catch do-able, when conditions are right. Toronto's 4.2 kW CIRV 88.9 makes it my way (316km/196 miles, as the crow flies) on occasion, even though they're not located on the CN Tower.

CIND-88.1 On The Air (Was: Re: Indie 88.1 FM now testing...)

Can I assume that the CIND-88.1 signal, once it's upgraded, will be comparable (or even stronger) to that of CKLN, the previous occupier of that frequency??

I know CIND will have more ERP than CKLN, but I don't know if they will transmit atop the CN Tower or from the same place CKLN transmitted from.

I found on Radio-Locator.com the old CKLN-88.1 signal map:

Thanks for the link, Joseph, though these maps mean nothing to me, as I routinely snag signals, from well beyond the fringe! :D

Wondering if this will eat into Radio 2's Toronto ratings, even further (as my not so secret hate on, for what CBC did to Radio 2 continues...;))?

There's also a Religious station @ 88.3 that used to upset the old CLKN signal at times. I wonder if they got that all worked out.

Now that Indie88 has been on for a while, does anyone think CFNY has anything to worry about?

My sense is that CFNY already alienated most of the likely Indie listeners. Consider the type of headlines Blundell gets vs the type of radio people like Alan Cross produce (who's advising at Indie) - I'd say if Indie's audience had a terrestrial home before, it would just as likely be something like Radio 2 or CIUT. I think "The Edge" lost that audience some time ago. Nickelback and shock jocks don't appeal to Indie's target audience.

I agree regarding CFNY. That was a great station, while I going was to college in the Toronto 'burbs during the mid-80's, but it's long past it's ground breaking music days. CIUT and Radio 2 (in particular) stand to lose market share. That shouldn't be a problem to either of them, though with Radio 2 going commercial, we'll see how long the CBC bean counters put up with it's ratings.

Listened to Indie88 on a recent trip to Western New York. The signal was spotty at best, actually similar to CFNY's pre-CN Tower signal in WNY (but unlike those days, streaming via the web is an option...though it's not the same, somehow). Sadly being at 88.1 also puts it at the mercy of interference from in-car FM transmitters.

Some interesting (and welcome) music choices going on (wasn't expecting Johnny Cash's "The Man In Black"). Lots of Can-con, of course. A few classics scattered about (Bowie, R.E.M, Ramones) but the focus seems to be new and emerging artists, as advertised.

Speaking of ads, currently the commercial breaks are quite short, with Bay-Bloor Radio being a frequent advertiser.
