Indy Arbs...Your Thoughts...

I still don't quite understand why WLHK is focused on "oldie based" country & content with a 4+/- share. When the Bear was on 104.5, it was carefully designed not to hurt WFMS & drew 5-6 shares in spite of that. Imagine what New Hit Country could do on that frequency with the intent of slicing the WFMS pie up. Maybe I'm missing something, but stations are dropping their 5 share oldies formats & along comes Hank and plays Buck Owens & Merle Haggard. I don't understand, but then, I'm not a programming type, so maybe I shouldn't expect to.

It's worth noting that when WIAU fired their talented air staff & hooked up the bird, they cut their audinece in half...pure brilliance.

WFMS continues to roll. WLHK seems to have a good enough chunk of the pie to make some money as well. Don't they both play old and new music?

WXNT didn't seem to be hurt by the new FM talk, although it is very early. It's quite possible there is room for both of them-if WXNT can make enough money to continue with the numbers they have.

WHHH seems to be on a steady slide down, but they do still have some decent numbers. Maybe the hip-hop thing has peaked.

WFMS plays the 30-40 year old country on a special weekend show (Saturday night?). Hank plays just enough of the stuff each hour that I can't stomach it. I do hope they're making money at it. I have a lot of Emmis shares that are worth about 15% of what they once were...

The question is...with WYXB doing quite well & the other two FM's doing so-so, could WIBC pair one of them up to compensate for WIBC's weak signal in the increasingly vital northern suburbs? Food for thought...

Boy, that would be a tough call, Bob. I think if it were me, I would do it on 93.1. WYXB is sounding great and consistent. I agree with your thoughts on Hank, but nonetheless, it's still doing better than it did as WENS in its' final days. I need to go look at those numbers!

WIBC would likely not get that much of a bump to offset the audience loss for one of their two weaker FM's. WIBC's demos also skew much older (less attractive to advertisers) than their FMs as a function of their programming (mostly?) and being on AM (lesser?). They can also strive for improvement in the ratings for 93.1 & 97.1.

WIBC's daytime coverage is fine, so sacrificing one of their FM's would not help the meatier part of their broadcast day. For nightime sports events they cover, they can simulcast on WLHK.

If they could have bought 97.9 instead of Moody, that would have expanded their coverage range to the north substantially.
A simulcast on WTTS would not provide significant coverage improvement for much of the north metro. WWKI would be a better choice (but I am not advocating Kokomo lose that significant station). 101.7 Elwood would be a more likely selection.
102.3 or 107.1 would fill in the SW portion of the metro where coverage is poor at night.

WWFT talk format - ratings down 78% from their last book as The Song. Brilliant.

WLHK is programmed as well as ever, and I have no idea why the ratings fell from about 6 a book or two after its debut to 3s now.

I don't think Hank is going anywhere any time soon. Nor do I think he is going to stop liking Hank Williams Jr.

WIBC's night signal has issues to the North. 93.9 seems like a good answer to me, but I doubt anything will come of this either.

HANK is a good radio station but it still plays older songs that people have never heard of. If the majority of your audience wouldn't know an old song, why play it? Just an opinion. They really should cut down on some of the older titles and only play songs that people know. FMS is still the best. No contest right now.

Just a reminder that 93.1 for many years was WIBC-FM. Those were the calls
when it first began broadcasting. I do not remember them ever simulcasting
back then with AM. I do remember they played a goodly amount of
classical music. Eventually then it became WNAP.

I listen to WKLU and WFBQ. Interesting if you look at the two over the past 6 months how they have both gone in different directions. Q95 is up almost a whole point and WKLU is down almost a whole point. Have WKLU listeners just gone back to Q95? It seems they play basically the same music so why such a big change?

Wow! 93.9 needs a new song. I mean format. 1430 should pick up oldies and 95.9 needs to
focus on their county before someones else does.

1430 oldies & 95.9 local makes some sense. Contrary to popular belief, Johnson County is not owned by Indy stations. Listen in the businesses in Franklin...it's Columbus that gets the nod...QMIX, Y106 and WKKG are the ones you hear playing. Yet, those stations don't really market to Franklin. WIAU is missing an opportunity in it's own back yard. But it's going to take something more creative than a Satellite feed to take advantage of it...

KLU was interesting in the beginning with some good old tunes, but once the basic rotation began playing the same ol' same ol' - I think Q gained some of their audience back. No hard "classic edge" on KLU.

However, the Colts would have definitely helped Q's ratings - will be interesting to see spring and summer ratings where it's music vs music.

Q realized they were getting a good ole fashioned "clock cleaning"....so they duplicate the same music, have better personalities and win because of better lead in programming (Bob and Tom) and signal strength (WKLU is a pea shooter-that should get a rise out of Russ)

Lots of posts about the Emmis stations but notice that Radio One's station's placed #3 & #6 and that their smooth jazz station WYJZ is starting to climb.

WIAU is missing an opportunity in it's own back yard.

I've ALWAYS thought that! Ever since I found out that there WAS a radio station in my hometown!

Why are they trying to be an Indianapolis station!?

I think it's been the OTHER way around from the get-go. I've yet to hear "Papa Was A Rolling Stone" on the Q. People gave KLU a chance because it was a different flavor of classic rock, but it's too mellow - then KLU made the mistake of trying to play the same music as Q - and you are correct in that even if it's the exact same song list, Q has MUCH better personalities and overall production.

Q has a track record of duplicating other station's music. When WNAP came back about 12 years ago, WFBQ decided it was now a Classic Rock station & kept WNAP from exceeding a 4 share. They are good at protecting what they've built.

If 1430 would flip to oldies, they'd see a 3 to a 5 share. No wonder the smooth jazz station went up. Someone flipped to 70's disco trash. Yuck! Yuck! Yuck! What a mistake!
The Franklin station needs to focus on Johnson County and get extra money from Indianapolis..
93.9 needs to face it. Those who want talk are fine with old fashioned AM.
