What happened to WKLU? From the way people post on here, you'd think they'd be going UP in the trends, not down as they have the past (4.4 to 3.2). I guess this answers my question on a previous thread regarding Alice Cooper compared to klu and jack. According to this, klu is less than HALF of q95 listenership.

Maybe they should fly a plane over the Brickyard this weekend.
New to this ratings game?

Sounds like radio now must have more than 12 year old girls listening. Looks like those girl's moms are listening too.

Looks like WKLU keeps losing ground. Has Oasis completely abandoned Indy for his Ft. Wayne venture? And that "no commercials" campaign is really paying off with listenership!

The big fish are attacking little WKLU. The Indy Jack is not doing the Canadian Jack format.
They are a classic hits format. Also, more classic hits on 107.9 now. I don't think this reflects
anything done wrong by Oasis or WKLU. This is the little station against the big corpoations.

Radio One NEEDS competition. I keep saying this. They ARE vernable. Look at what happened in LA with KKBT, and the same story plays out in their other markets

Same thing that happened when WNAP returned in the mid 90's...WFBQ suddenly became a Classic Rock station & kept WNAP at or below a 4 share. These big boys need competition to keep 'em from getting lazy. Russ has stepped up to the plate. Now if only competition would force the corporations to dump the voice tracks...

The KLU trend is going down, down, down. WHY would corporate try to emulate that? Corporate trends on Voice Tracked stations are going up, up, up! People want MUSIC - Not a bunch of bad board op jokes and gimmicks, or "little guy" rah rah on this board. Individual ownership is great, but it doesn't mean it's being done RIGHT (or any different than corporate).

When Live DJs are restricted to reading liners - it is the same as voice tracking - there is no personality, only more reason for people to change the station looking for the next classic rock song they've heard a million and one times. Maybe it's not Russ' fault - but if you're going with live jocks, wouldn't you get KNOWN personalities to attract listeners for more than just the music? I don't know what they're paying, but it must not be much.

I'm sure Russ is happy he spent millions to keep Q from getting lazy. And just how do you know when a classic rock station is getting lazy? Does it play different classic rock music?

They own 3 FMs, each one of them serving a segment of the "urban" market while not getting in the way of their sister stations. No owner would wants to take on a 3-station strong cluster. And of course they have a gospel AM serving another segment as well.

Not sure what "vernable" is, but there's more to the Los Angeles situation: dwindling African-American population (in terms of percentage), competition from KPWR and others, and a focus problem KKBT has had off and on.

In a word...Yes, they do play different classic rock music. Let me correct my descriptive term...I should have used "Broad" rather than "Lazy". Before WNAP returned, Q95's version of Classic Rock included mostly "Eagles - Peaceful Easy Feeling, Chicago - Colour My World, Minnie Ripperton - Loving You, Ace - How Long and Harry Chapin - Cat's In The Cradle" type of music. They were the closest thing I ever heard to a "soft AC" rock station. Talk about a night & day evolution away from their "Kick Ass Rock 'n Roll" days! When WNAP came along, that boring crap went out the window & Q95 was forced back into their core format. So I concede poor wording on my 'lazy' assessment, but the fact is that while WNAP didn't unseat Q95, it did take them out of double digit ratings...and after WNAP left the format, I don't believe they ever returned to those lofty heights. If WKLU keeps other stations from getting 'broad & boring', then I thank Russ for his service to the Indy radio listening community.

So you're saying Classic Rock in this town is NOT "broad & boring?" You're telling me you don't hear those same beatles songs EVERY hour?

EVERY Indianapolis radio station is boring, no matter what the format. Time to go with an mp3 or ipod.

Broad & Boring is in the ear of the listener...and yes, I do prefer hearing the same great Beatles tunes over & over than hearing the same Soft AC 'classic rock' songs over & over.

They're not. They're filled with all MY favorite songs because I select the songs that go on it. The variety is wide. The time span is broad. Some songs are by one-hit wonders. Steppenwolf might be followed by Wilson Pickett. But I pick them ALL.
