Indy needs a Funny Morning Show

Who do you guys think is the funniest, or should I say least funniest in Indianapolis. I was a huge fan of the morning mess on wnou, but they are in Atlanta now. Its pretty good when the music scheduling on THE TRACK is funnier than any of the people in Indy. Come on Nap Town,,,,, Bring us back our morning funnies...... Maybe the new morning show on Radio Now will improve with time, but who knows.... I want some more Laugh Out Loud Funny.....

bob and tom were a great funny morning team years ago.now they are a bore.

I read that out of their pay they paid others (the guy who played haji and the others who called bits in) but after they were on top for a while they droped them to keep the money for themselves.the problem is the show suffered.people keep listening though. I don`t see why.

I think the most recent "good" morning show in Indy was on 97.1 ... Scott and Anne I think. That was a couple of morning shows before Wank & O'Brien.

WTTS is OK, and WFMS is OK too. I've never gotten into B&T.

Last time I checked the dial in the A.M. in Indy there were plenty of shows with announcers
just rolling in laughter at their own humor. Most of it was either about sex organs or the toilet.
When I was 12 years old, I would have benn shocked and amused. But now I can't even get out
a chuckle.

So do you think you can out do Bob and Tom? They have most of the listeners who want a funny
morning show.

I know a certain station who had a guy off the stree playing classic rock. He made a 1.5 with
ratings. He was replaced by a big name who decided to do humor instead of music. The seasoned
pro got a .5.

So, do you get the point? Russ Oasis did the right thing when he decided to let the music do the talking!

yea im not impressed with the "morning" shows anymore... as stated bob and tom was funny in the old days, but now its like any other "morning" show..
i dont think we will see funny shows for awhile.. i think the general public just wants to hear music in the am drive with traffic reports ever x amount of minutes

You are absolutely right.

There are still some great radio guys out there who could make a tremendous morning show if given the freedom to do so. I used to work with two of them. Problem is, everything is so safe these days. No one is willing to take a chance. Great personalities need freedom to be themselves and take a few risks. They may fail at first but if they are allowed to flourish, I think they can do so.

Again, Im only referring to two amazingly talented guys I used to work with. But I am sure there are several other people out there just like them that could fit the above description.

Bob & Tom lost their local comedic edge when they went national. They have to shoot for a much broader audience now.

What about Smiley? Nobody has mentioned him...he gets ratings doesn't he? or am i wrong?

I really liked the old Morning Mess, I thought they were hillarious and well in touch with Indianapolis. I used to like Wank and O Brian when they were on Radio Now years ago, and I used to like The Big Dumb Show on WRZX. I think morning shows should have more talk, comdedy and news between 6 and 8, and then between 8 and 10 they can play more music since most people are already at work or school by that time. When I used to drive into Indy every morning for work I depended on the local morning shows for Traffic, Weather, and Laughter. Im not much of a morning person so I actually prefer some talk and comedy in the morning to help wake me up and get me in a better mood. I loved the prank call bits on the Morning Mess. Bob and Tom seem like they are mostly for older men in their mid 40s that grew up with them.

Oh, and as for Smiley,,,, Yeah he's okay, but he seems like he targets mainly female soccer Moms. I think Smiley has got the talent and the humour to be really funny if he was on a Mainstream CHR, or a Rock station instead of a Hot AC.

It's those male soccer moms you've really gotta look out for...

BTW, when did Britain reclaim Martinsville? [It's "humor" around these parts.]

Someone made the observation that Bob and Tom got worse when they went national. I agree to an extent. The biggest issue now with non-funny morning shows (read: darn near all of them), including Bob and Tom, is that most stations don't care about how much music they play in the morning. As a result, most of the morning shows are "stream of consciousness" talk which is just bad. Before Bob and Tom were syndicated, they had to fit what they did in around music and more local elements, which meant we only heard the best stuff they had.

I'm not focusing solely on Bob and Tom, because this is a trend on most morning shows. The net result is that the personalities are lazier in their preparation and presentation of content.

To answer the original post, there hasn't been a truly funny or creative morning show in Indy for years. (Scott and Ann on WENS?????? Really????)

Bob and Tom are really some of the pioneers in the style of morning show that so many others try to copy.

Howard Stern can't beat them. Nor could Mancow. So why if national names can't compete would

local yokos think they can?

When Bob and Tom arrived at Q in 1983, all of the music stations in town were pretty much doing liner cards.
With the demise of the original WNAP format when WENS started siphoning off WIBC's adult contemporary ratings, there was NO personality on the FM dial. Q-95 did have a "morning team" concept at the time with
Carrie and Coop (Carrie Carlson and Steve Cooper) but their show didn't have the fire power that Bob and Tom brought to the rocker. IBC's Gary Todd was still the morning ratings kingpin and would be until (I believe) the spring book in '87. Bob and Tom evolved over the years, playing regular format music interspersed with bits in the beginning to gradually playing their own parodies and yucking it up in between. Not unlike Todd in the 80s,
Bob and Tom have loyal local listeners. Those listeners love the fact that Bob and Tom still broadcast from Fall Creek Road, that they still help Indianapolis charities and call Indy home.

That's what I see anyway.

of course the reason bob and tom don`t play any music besides their paradies is they want to have their syndicated show fit in any style station.

I contend though, that they were at their best when they did their bits between the rock songs.it didn`t help when they dropped the shows army of contributers to keep the money they cost for themselves.good for them but it weakened the show.how it is still so popular is beyond me.

were they beating howard stern outside of indianapolis before howard went to satalite radio?

as a side note. one time in 94 or 95 durring a newscast they did a series of remarks about one newsstory that I thought were spontanious.the thing is they did the same "spontanious "lines for the next 2 newscasts.

Fair opinions otherwise, but this doesn't apply to the question at hand about Indy morning shows.

Howard and Mancow couldn't touch them here and those are national-level shows with the appropriate resources to compete.

In neutral markets, yours is a different -- and fair -- question than the one currently debated.

you missunderstood my question. I wasn`t asking it to put down or get a chance to put down bob and tom. I am just curious.that has nothing to do with what I think of bob and tom.

No, I didn't, nor did I assume that you were.

You asked how they held up outside of Indy against Mancow and Howard.

I was pointing out that such a question isn't really relevant to this particular discussion.

It began with the quality of Indy morning shows; Bob & Tom came up and some voiced the opinion that their quality and local appeal have gone down since going syndicated.
