Indy radio not good

For the last year to 18 months, Indianapolis radio continues to go downhill.

The best radio markets in Indiana today are Terre Haute and Columbus.

What specific issues do you have with the market? I would contend that the competition and the sound has become even better recently. At least we're not saturated with AC stations (as much), we don't have one choice for rock and one for country anymore, and we have some pretty decent personalities.

Is it the best market? Not by far, but it's not that bad.

IMHO, FBQ is going after WIBC for the "tired" audience. They are sounding repetitive. Same ole stuff day in; day out. Midday and afternoons same stuff, (4 o'clock foreplay, five o'clock funnies, etc). They changed Laura and Maddog, but that is it. They are in dire need of either a shake-up to the programming, or in the office. They are free falling, and KLU and Jack are picking their audience off one-by-one.

Hate to say it, if something isn't done, they could be the next ENS!

> > OK, Am I the only one laughing about the Columbus and Terre Haute are better thing? That is like saying I am tired of the Red Sox, I would rather watch Pawtucket! True, things could be better, but it still beats listening to a station in the sticks. I am biased, I am from Indy, but I think the majority of people would rather listen to Indy and almost all jocks/staff would want to work in Indy. I like the market. Competition is good.

Second that. I think it's actually IMPROVED of late. The competition, as another poster mentioned, of Jack/KLU v. Q and Hank v. FMS will only force every player to bring their 'A' game to the table. Yeah, a couple of 18-34 products have some issues that they're working out, but it was just over a year ago that the only interesting slugfest in the market was between our two soft AC's. As far as Terre Haute and Columbus go, I'm sure the talent there is flattered by the initial post, but I'm guessing a majority would give their left (insert body part here) to broadcast in market #41.

The initial post must be a joke. I mean, what does Terre Haute and Columbus actually have? While Indy has:

Three stations that are playing the new oldies sluggin it out (KLU/JJK/FBQ)
Two country stations slugging it out (the old ENS/FMS)
Several AC/Pop stations (ZPL/NOU to name two)
A good Christian station (The Song)
Two talk stations (WIBC/WXNT)
Two sports stations (WNDE/WXLW)
An alternative rock station (The X)
Urban (HHH)
AAA (TTS)

Even Jazz (WYJZ)

All it is missing is a true Oldies station. If I missed anything, forgive me, but that is pretty diverse. What diversity does TH and C have, becides marrying your cousin?

I think the pollution in Terre Haute has finally started killing brain cells.

One company that owns a newspaper and other radio stations controls most of the money. Reising does a good job of competing though. And there's Bruce and Mitzi Quinn with WHUM-LP.

White River - Audio Vault WKKG, WINN, WWWY, WCSI (with some live shifts)
Reising - WRZQ and WYGS (Non Comm Southern Gospel)
WHUM-LP - Eclectic Mix of the 40's 50's 60's 70's 80's and today.

Not belittling any of these. Worked here in high school. Great training ground. Just don't see how this is better than Indianapolis.

I didn't grow up in Terre Haute but most of their stations are voice tracked with no people.

Please explain.

You missed one. Actually two if you count the IU translator. :)

They may not have much diversity versus the BIG CITY but MIX-FM in particular blows away RadioNow as a Top-40. MIX-FM blows away almost any BIG CITY Top-40 station out there. They always have. I used to live through static on the west bypass of Indy to listen to 100.7 over 93.1. The only station to sound better is another Indiana small city Top-40 - 96-5 WAZY last year when Mark Driscoll was doing the VO's there. Give some props to these midwest, smaller town Top-40 giants. The BIG CITY of INDY could take some notes as least in this format.

For example? What makes MIX FM better?

Imaging, recurrent and gold selections, more in touch with the community, overall feel and presentation of the station. Listen and learn.

I used to love AZY when I lived in North Central Indiana, in the 80s. If they do the same today as they did then, then I agree they are better. Haven't heard MIX-FM, though.

> If you mean the proper way to doink your sister, then yes, the BIG CITY does have a lot to learn. Po-Dunk towns have lame air talents and crappy imaging. PERIOD. Music can be debated, but "big time" sound can not. The best jock in the sticks makes a good weekender in Indy. Not saying that all jocks in Indy are good, but as a whole, compared to Terre-Tucky, they are better! HOLY COW!

I worked at WAZY in the 80's when the place was an untouchable blow-torch. Went back and spent 2 years at the end of the 90's trying to convince them that they could regain their Top heritage, but to no avail. They flipped less than a year after I left and blew out the book. Havent heard them since '02 though.

Never heard Terretucky referred to as a great radio town....at least in the past 20 years....

Aren't those stations still dark?

Sorry - Korn Country. I keep thinking of Hee Haw. And 100.7

Thanks Brian

I LOVED Z-96 back in about 1990. I remember listening to them for some of the songs that ZPL wouldn't play. Good imaging, upbeat, great DJ's....they had the whole package. I could care less about what was going on in Lafayette, but I kept listening. And that was also when ZPL was at its best. A great time for Indy radio.

I drove through Lafayette a few years back and couldn't believe what they had done. It was an A/C station...and not even a GOOD A/C station. I recently heard them and they sounded like the station that I remembered. Wish I could pick them up again, but HHH keeps gettin' in the way.
