Indy Sports Talkers

According to the Indy Star Jay Query formerly of Channel 6 and WIBC along with current XL 950 afternoon host Derek Schultz will begin a new talk show on 1260 WNDE Aug. 15.

Is this the final nail in the coffin for XL 950? Or will they just pick up the Doug Gottlieb show from ESPN Radio and have pretty much all the ESPN programming without the ESPN brand name since it seems that all Emmis and 1070 want from ESPN is Mike & Mike in the Morning?

They obviously couldn't afford MPOS and I doubt they would bring Rakestraw back. Who out there then in the local market could fill the afternoon slot for XL 950?

I'm happy for Jake! He's a very talented guy who deserves this opportunity. There are any number of qualified people who would be interested in the XL 950 gig to use it as a stepping stone to something better.

Naw, they'll continue sports regardless of whether they have a live afternoon show. WNDE is doing the same thing now - it's syndicated Fox Sports Net all the time now that MPOS is gone. XL950 will pick up ESPN's afternoon show or perhaps Sports News afternoon show and continue on as sports. Actually it's a shame that Emmis has the ESPN contract, because they're not doing anything with the programming. XL 950 would probably love to have another shot at clearing all of ESPN's programming. But regardless, they'll stay sports.

Why? Because there's money in it. Why did WNDE pick up the Indians play by play? Not because they think there's listeners. It's minor league baseball! Keep a scorecard in hand cause that's the only way you'll know who's in the uni's. 1260 picked up the Indians for the broadcast fees - the Indians are now the biggest advertiser on the station [paying for their clearance]. XL950 lost those fees [substantial loss of revenue] but still are getting money for some of the local college sports clearance, and advertising they can sell in other marque team programming [Reds, college football, etc.] They ain't getting rich, but there's still more revenue even at sports station #3 than a simulcast of the FM.

I'm surprised WNDE is even considering another live afternoon drive show - I thought they would save the money, take the Indians fees, and continue to package the daypart programming with their FMs to drive revenue on a low overhead, all syndicated sports station too.

WNDE has always had a Live Afternoon Sports talk show dating back to the Early 90's when Mark Partick started the First Time Around, Then Mark Boyle Took over, then Tim Bragg and Bill Benner, then Mark Partrick again, then JMV then back to MPOS. WNDE will keep afternoon drive local for as long as it brings them in money.

on the WXLW front. they probly could clear more ad money Putting Sean Hannity back onto an almost city market Grade signal which it isnt getting now on 95.9. and Who says being the 3rd Sports talker in is bringing them in any money. they have the worst signal of the 3 sports talker behind 1070 and 1260. the sponsors would go to 1070 and 1260 before considering 950 for their sports talk ad's

Do the people who run wxlw radio know that that Derek is gone????

just wondering , since he is still featured on their website

any feed back from the show he and Jake are doing at WNDE?
