INDY WITH 3 SPORTS TALK STATIONS

Yesterday at the Wooden Tradition they ran a sign for the "Dan Patrick Show on SportsTalk XL 950 coming January 7" on the scorers table digital sign board at Conseco Fieldhouse.

I guess this means WXLW in its infinite wisdom has decided it can survive as the third wheel.

Any ideas on who will host 1070 The Fan's local shows? It shows a 3-hour show in the PM drive slot and then a one-hour show following on the WIBC website.

Doubt it's Boyle.

Word from Monument Circle is the AM afternoon sports show will be hosted by Bob Kravitz (yes, the dopey Indy Star writer) and Eddie White. Last I knew of Eddie, he was the Reebok rep here in Indy. They probably hired him for his rolodex because he has no on air experience at all, but then Bob doesn't have much either...he doesn't add much to that Q95 pregame show. Apparently the goofy programming folks at Emmis are going to try to make radio legends out of two more no-names...good luck to them with those two.

Well Kravitz has to be the new Host on WIBC because he wasnt on the Q95 pregame show today it was Hermann, JMV and Mad Dogg

Wow! 3 sports talk stations in a city that can't even get decent ratings for one? Does anyone have a pipeline into the gentleman who owns 950? Is he keeping the same guys on? Just wondering because if they couldnt get decent ratings with ESPN attached to them how are they going to do it without? Didnt someone on here say they are selling spots for only a few dollars each? If that is true why would anyone continue that?

there replacing the ESPN programming with Mancow simulcasted from sister station WFDM, Dan Patrick, and then Sporting News radio the rest of the day save the Rakestraw/Wockamiller afternoon drive show and any other local program they aired while they had the ESPN Name

Hermann, JMV, Mad Dogg, Rakestraw/Wak, et all get their "inside information" from the same place the rest of us do - ESPN, and that day's newspaper.

Kravitz IS the newspaper. If there's breaking sports news, my guess is I'm tuning into Kravitz, who is likely 'in the know' before the rest of the 'hosts' around town.

In general, newspaper guys don't make 'rivoting' talk show hosts - remember CONRAD Brunner? - but they usually have more 'inside' info and knowledge (instant credibility - regardless of opinions) that the current crop of hosts lack.

AM 950 will never have any ratings, regardless of format, with the crappy signal they put into Indy. Sports is the smartest thing they can do, because it rarely takes ratings to sell. They can program HS sports, and sell local businesses. They can take money from the Indians to clear their play-by-play; same with local small colleges who can't get clearance any other way. And none of this programming has to generate any ratings for them to make money. It's better than any music format they could put on that AM signal as far as revenue is concerned. It's the smartest thing Raven can do, considering it wasn't very smart to buy that AM in the first place, at least to make any attempt to compete in metro Indy.

In general, I agree most people go to ESPN or Fox Sports for their instant sports fix, but I don't know about the newspaper guys. I would say the big name sports guys from the newspapers, TV stations, etc all have the same contacts and sources, but if they spend most of their time trying to antagonize and create controversy (like Kravitz), they aren't going to get the same cooperation (and thus the inside story) as the others. I think it's great that Kravitz likes to stir things up, but he often seems to do it just for the sake of stirring things up, not because there really is some legitimate controversy. I'd say that will be his downfall on radio where listeners will tire of his frequently arrogant, rude and antagonistic personality.

I had Bob on my radio show before and from that experience I think he actually might do a real good job. He is actually a very friendly, well spoken guy. That's something that doesn't always come off in a newspaper article (friendliness that is). Granted, a daily show is a lot harder to do that a one hour interview. But if it is any cursor, then he will be just fine.

Say what you want, but I'm with Ho on this one (scary thought). I think people will tune in because he is a name in this city and he will get scoops. I will be tuning in and giving it a chance.

It's great now that we have all of these sports stations maybe we could get the White Sox from Chicago to move to Indy. Once the NFL's season is over and the way the Pacers have been as of late its going to be a looooooooooooooooooonnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnggggggggggg winter.
