Infinity Logic - or lack of

First, I'll admit I like the new Jack FM. However, I don't get the logic of the stations chosen to put the format on. Here they blow up an oldies station with 20 years of heritage and decent billing instead of WCKG. WCKG does bill the same as WJMK, but is only in the mid 1's. Also, expect CKG's billing to go down after Stern leaves, so Jack would have been perfect there. New York is just as bad where WCBS was playing oldies since the 70s and was in the 3s wheras WNEW was in the mid 1's. I don't know the billing situation, but not flipping a dog station like NEW makes no sense. So what was the logic here, why flip stations with decent ratings and billings instead of the dog stations. I realize the audience was aging, but at least WJMK and WCBS had a large audience compared to WCKG and WNEW.

The big question is - will someone take the chance and pick up this exclusive format in these major markets? There's one company that could do this - has the money, the signals, the braintrust, and the call letters in both places.

ABC Should Flip The Zone to WLS-FM & WPLJ to WABC-FM

The obvious scenario is for ABC to flip The Zone to Oldies and become Music Radio WLS-FM. Use all the old jingles, steal Lujack & Tommy from WRLL, throw on Winston, Brown, Biondi & friends.

They could do the same thing to 'PLJ in NY. Flip it to Music Radio WABC-FM. Dan Ingram, Cousin Brucie, Bob Shannon etc...Scott Shannon could remain PD since he's doin' the syndicated oldies thing now anyway. The Modern AC format is dead anyway and 'PLJ (despite it billing pretty well) wont be able to play all of that 70s, 80s & 90s stuff anymore. Jack's going to erode their numbers even more.

Is ABC smart enough? Is it worth it? Will someone beat them to the punch?
If so, who'd be next in line?

They kept the bad one, killed the good one, and are now competing with one of their own. This can easily hurt WXRT! Yeah, it's different, but the formats are a bit similar.

I'll bet you that soon they will blow up WXRT and Hurbanize it (or give it some other format), and leave WCKG alone. I would not be surprised if they repeated their mistake and did the thing that makes the least amount of sense.

Has that ever happened?

There always seems to be some sentiment about "putting the band back together" whenever a hole like this opens up. Has it ever happened in any market or in any format?

I'm talking soup-to-nuts, resurrecting a station thats been gone for several years and bringing it back to life on the same stick (outside of a weekend).

Most people don't remember those old jocks. Everybody wants to get a younger audience, they won't do that by getting Dick Biondi, Lukack, etc. I can see the reasoning why putting on a JACK-FM format is a good idea, but when you have a format for 20 years, I don't know how good of an idea that is.

All I want to say is that flipping the Zone at this time IMO is a bad move. You're better off moving Mancow to the Loop and then flipping Q101.

WJMK was rated over a full share higher than The Zone, WJMK's billing was also double of The Zone $16 million for WJMK and $7 million for The Zone. Even though the WJMK jocks are still under contract, they could probably still get some former jocks like Landecker, Sirott, Pat O'Kelly and others.

this makes a LOT of sense...stay tuned!

Re: Has that ever happened?

While on paper, having 94.7 become WLS Musicradio again sounds like a good ides, I also hear that ABC is planning on selling their radio station so--get this--they can buy more tv stations! That would leave CBS as the only original Big 3 network to still have its radio division.

I'm wondering if Dahl is factoring into all this. It would seem to me that he refuses to be moved to the Score, which would be the only logical Infinity station to put him at, and so they couldn't flip 'CKG to Jack. How much is left on his contract?
