Could happen, Infinity needs to grow in this market to keep up with ClearChannel. They have published their desire to test Spanish market.
Houston would be a great market for that. The point in many ways have become Jack radio, since the jocks rarley open the mic. Dont laugh. Just one year ago who would have known the word Mega?

I doubt it.

Testing Spanish? Wow, I am surprise they don't want to bring 'Jack'.

There will be NO Spanish on 104.1 over the Houston airwaves!

If Infinity is going to spend around $100 mil for KRBE, why would they kill it off???
That station has been in the top 5 or 6 for so many years. It has to be a cash cow. Can't see that happening.

"$100 Million?"

Not even close. Much lower.

Infinity is not that dumb. KRBE is one of the best CHR stations in the country. They do well in ratings, revenue, and they have been around forever. It would be different if they were struggling. Sure they took a slight hit in the last wave of ratings, but they also just lost their very popular morning man and if you ask me they are trying to hard to compete with "The Box", "Party", and "Mega", by playing TOO much hip-hop.

If Infinity wants a cut at the Spanish Demos, they would be more likely to buy a struggling station, that would not cost them that much, and flip it, rather than flip a very popular CHR station that is not struggling, and is probably going to cost them 9 figures.

And don't be so sure that it won't cost over 100 million. Just look at some of the recent transactions on the FCC's website. Buying a radio station ain't cheap, especially a radio station the caliber of KRBE. Susquehanna will have several bidders. I think whoever gets it, will pay in excess of 9 figures.

Didn't Radio One pay in the range of $70 mil for 92.1 KROI?

If that station, which isn't even a Mo.City stick went for 70 mil, KRBE could bring around 100 mil.

$72.5 million.

Not only is 92.1 not a Missouri City stick, it is a C1. And that price was just for the license and transmitter facility. The previous Classical format had been a ratings turkey for years.

I'll guess $120 million for KRBE. There was a long speculative thread about just this a few months ago, if you search the archives.

And I don't see full Spanish language on 104.1, either. Perhaps something leaning more towards Party or Mega, but nothing like Estereo Latino, for instance.

My guess, based on past sales, is that KRBE, with cash flow, is worth about $120 million.

KOVE with no billing went for $80.

Infinity is definitely doing some flipping to Spanish.

But like the other posters here, I doubt that Infinity would flip KRBE.

There's no doubt about it that the potential KRBE sale will go over $100M just based on the current cash flow and the long-term ratings stability. Whoever buys it, being Infinity or anyone else, would be absolutely foolish to tinker with the format. I agree with the posts above. If Infinity wants to break into a Spanish language format in this market, they would be much better off grabbing a cheap station and tool it up and find a niche between Esterio Latino and Mega.

Actually try HIGHER then 100 million. Several years ago Cox paid 100 million dollars for 93.1 in Miami, and last time I checked Houston was a far bigger major market.

And the Miami station was classical, so they were buying a stick, not a business.
