Infinity suspends Stern for a day for promoting Sirius too much

This is the longest goodbye in history, as Stern reaches his final weeks on Infinity. Infinity slapped him with a one-day suspension tomorrow for gabbing too much about Sirius. Here's a story about it:

Howard Stern getting forced time off
by Matthew Flamm

Howard Stern will be taking a rest on Tuesday, courtesy of his employers at Infinity Broadcasting Corp.

The “King of All Media” was suspended with pay for one day for talking too much about Sirius Satellite Radio, where he is moving his show in January. He has become an increasing annoyance for his current employer with seemingly nonstop promotion of the satellite service and diatribes against Infinity, a division of Viacom Inc.

“He’s been doing that a lot, and I’m sure he’ll continue to do it,” said a media buyer.

WXRK-FM, the flagship station for the Howard Stern Show, referred calls to Don Buchwald, Mr. Stern’s agent, who was traveling and could not be reached.

The one-day suspension was the inevitable result of the quandary Infinity has found itself in as it permits Mr. Stern to promote his upcoming Sirius show. Mr. Stern will launch two full-time channels on Sirius when he moves his morning show there in January.

Despite his promotion of the competition, Infinity has kept Mr. Stern on the air to take advantage of the premiums advertisers pay to appear on his show.

According to a radio insider, a “live read” on the Howard Stern Show -- in which the host promotes the product himself -- can cost as much as $5,000. Running a taped commercial on the show, as WXRK will do tomorrow, costs about half that.

Tomorrow morning, the shock jock’s fans will hear a “best of” the Howard Stern Show on WXRK-FM and in the more than 20 markets around the country where the show still airs.

Infinity did not suspend Sterny, Hoo Hoo is taking the day off to be with his so called girlfriend for an event she is hosting. The source of the news of Hoo Hoo's "suspension" was Howard 100 - News on Sirius, which itself should have been a sign of shenanigans.

No press release from Inifinity and the only source is Hiward 100 news.... lmfao!

Ah, man...the whole thing's a soap opera...

You're an idiot.

NEW YORK (AP) -- Howard Stern was pulled off the air for one day Monday after heavily promoting his move to satellite radio.

"We expect him back on Wednesday," said Karen Mateo, a spokeswoman for Infinity Broadcasting Corp., which carries Stern's syndicated show in more than 20 markets. Infinity is a unit of media giant Viacom Inc.

She wouldn't call Stern's absence a suspension and declined to comment further. Listeners will hear a compilation of Stern's best shows on Tuesday, she said.

But Stern's spokesman Matt Traub confirmed the shock jock had been suspended, adding: "This is an act of desperation by men who are losing their once-in-a-lifetime franchise."

The action was first reported on the Howard 100 channel carried by Sirius Satellite Radio Inc., where Stern is moving his show next year. The channel said Stern was suspended for talking too much about his impending move to satellite.

Stern announced his departure last year to Sirius, where he received a $500 million contract to begin in January 2006. Stern boasts an audience of about 12 million and revenues of about $100 million from his morning radio show. His last live radio show for Infinity is scheduled for December 16.

Sirius spokesman Patrick Reilly declined to comment Monday.

Re: You're an idiot.

You just proved scotter's point. Look at this closely. The only people calling it a suspension are Howard's people/Sirius. Infinity speicifically WOULDN'T call it a suspension. They should have. The press is stupid and does no real work and trusts all previous "sources" no matter the origin. Stern must have gotten such a hard on when this hit the AP. I know I would if a news story I made up to promote myself got picked up by the AP. You may think he is great, you may think he's washed up, but there is NO denying he is a smart, shrewd businessman who knows the media and how to use it as well as anyone.

Re: You're an idiot.

that proved nothing except you want to spin it the way you want.

you're sayin howard just walked off for a day and infinity didn't care?

rhetorical question, don't bother. i listen to the show and they talked about how the gm, chiusano or whatever, broke it to him after monday's show and about the meeting between hollander and stern during the day of the suspension.

weren't no stunt, hollander was hot.

This suspension is all hype...don't get fooled by the fool it is all publicity for everyone including his current employer

Re: You're an idiot. But Stern is Genius

Again, you are getting your info from the SHOW.

Infinity didn't spin it they chose not to comment. Why? Because controversy still gets ratings and Stern is still getting ratings for them until January. If they were really scared of Sirius, they would cut him off the air. They have that power. They have done it with other, lesser shows. But Stern is as big a commodity as everyone believes. It was a CLASSIC stunt. And it was brilliant. I like the show. I have the utmost respect for Stern. But this was a stunt it went VERY well.

I have been a Stern fan for years, but the last few months have been terrible. I have found myself gravitating to Opie and Anthony.
