Info on 107.5

Hey Guys and Gals:

I got some info on another site about 107.5 and I wanted to see from you all if it is right.

Here we go:

1.107.5 signed on on July 7th 1974 with the calls WIGL and a format of country called WIGGLE 107.5.

2. in 1976 WIGL changed calls to WJOK and simulcasted 1260 WWOK country format to 1979 when it was sold and changed to WQBA with a Spanish/AC format.

Thanks again!!!

T.J.

Yes, you are correct. It started out as a progressive/album oriented country station. It flipped to an MOR pop station in 1977 for about a year. It then became a WWOK simulcast. It was nice having WWOK on FM. It was kind of a shame those stations got out of the country music business (I know they were sold) just as country music was becomming more popular, especially in large cities. WWOK went off the air in late 1980. I really got into country music with WWOK! It was alot of fun to listen to.

Wouldn't really call the early days of "Super Q" (WQBA-FM) "Spanish AC"......Probably more Spanish Top 40....Music mix was Salsa/Merengue and English Disco back then.

Think it was an evolving process which took place in the late 80s-early 90s....By the early 90s, they had dropped the English music and the "Super Q" name.....Then came a series of different slogans and variations of Spanish.

By late 1994 they tried a "Super Q" renaissance (complete with English 70s-80s disco), but that was short lived and WAMR came on the air with Spanish AC in late 1995 on that frequency which it's been since then.

As I recall, Bill Tanner and I launched Amor sometime in 1996. I think Heftel bought WRTO and WAQI in '93, and got QBA AM and FM in mid-96, and the Amor format came right after. I don't recall if 107.5 at that time was doing the La Exitosa thing or what, but it never found its way as long as it tried to be "bilingual." We had the first staff meeting at Bill's Broward home, with folks like Betty Pino, Tony Campos, etc.

Sure it was 96?? I seem to remember having a New Years party and hearing "98 Caliente" with Maria Cristina (on the new freq) on 12/31/95 into 1/1/96 (I was down from Gainesville for Christmas break 95 and remember hearing the "new RTO" alot).

It wasn't Exitosa by then......I left Miami for Gainesville in Fall '94 and it was "Exitosa 107"....They were "Q-107" for a few months in Fall 94 when I was up there, then by the time I came down for Christmas break '94 they had brought in Leo Vela and plastered all of Miami with "Leo's Back" billboards and became "Super Q" again until they eventually did the frequency swap.

The sale went through in mid-1996 so that is why I believe it was 96 when we did the flip. I know later in 1996 we used the Amor logo with a more purple shade of blue as the logo for 106.7 and 1480 AM in Houston, so that would pretty much place the change then.

Leo has certainly bounced around at stations that got no numbers...
