Info on Jack FM plans from April

I've been talking with one of my sources who was in the know about the plans for Jack FM this past April. Apparently, Infinity was set to put Jack on 98.5, though as we all know they were beaten to the punch by Entercom. As Inside Radio reported that Infinity was beaten by a day, and all Jack FM stations seem to launch at 5:00PM EST, then 98.5 Jack FM would have launched at 5:00PM on April 15, 2005.

If the WBMX information is correct, which I believe that it is, 103.3 would not have been Jacked, meaning that Infinity has considerable confidence in WODS, along with KRTH/Los Angeles, which was left alone when KCBS was Jacked. So, it can be presumed that Infinity does not want to kill out all of it's oldies stations.

Just thought I'd share this information with those of you interested.

Im afraid your source is way off base. Jack in Boston? maybe, on 98.5 Cash Cow? never. Just not even a possibility.

Jack in Boston was certain, until Infinity was beaten by a day with Mike. Inside Radio reported that this occured in both Boston and San Francisco.

98.5 was the lowest rated of Infinity's Boston properties at the time, and they were betting big after the launch of KCBS in L.A. Then again, I'm just telling you what I know.

yes there were rumors about a Jack coming to Boston and 98.5 was mentioned as a possibility.

From Boston Radio Watch:

(and also the week before)

Then, on April 14, the debut of Mike:

Interesting information. Mix 98.5 can still sound like a Jack musically. Has their playlist expanded the past few months?

Re: Opinions are like belly buttons...

YOU don't like it, Ed, and that's fine. There are a large number of people who do, so how does that make it bad? From a business standpoint, no expensive jocks to pay. From a listener POV, REAL variety, a bit of attitude and the element of "wow, what's next?" I was in NYC last month and spent some time with Jack, and to these ears (which have 22 years in radio in market sizes from unrated to Top 10)-how much experience do YOU have in the real broadcasting world?) it sounds like it could be a winner. Let's see how it does in another 3 or 4 books. Remember Jammin' Oldies? All Comedy?
Based on your handle it appears you like rap. I personally hate it with a passion, but would never say a rap format is "bad". If a station can get decent ratings and profits with rap, then what's wrong with it? Radios have been equipped with tuning knobs since the 1920's or so. I hate Country too, but millions of others love it. Does that make them all wrong and me right? Hardly.

(RANT MODE ON) Not referring to anyone in particular, but is anyone else tired of a few people who have little to no experience in broadcasting passing themselves off as self-styled experts? It must be nice to have all the answers. The recent posts about moving formats and frequencies are laughable, in that the marketing costs, listener confusion and ratings disruptions compared to the benefits (read: increased profits) make those ideas unworkable at best. (RANT MODE OFF). People are welcome to their opinions, but if commercial radio doesn't play what you like, I respectfully suggest buying a satellite radio or Ipod-type device.

That really doesn't matter that much and I doubt that they were the lowest rated at the time. 12+ maybe but that isn't their goal ever. Yes there was TALK about Jack coming to Boston and it was rumour, in fact the talk has little to do with Entercom beating them to the punch either because there was still a possible plan to launch a Jack station in Boston because the powers that be felt that Entercom "was'nt doing it right" either way if it happened it would have been on ODS, Mix just bills too much to touch it. Plus it is Greg Strassell's baby, I think he would sooner sell a kidney on Ebay then see that station touched formatically.

I'm just telling you what I know, either way it did not happen on either station so I guess we both know JACK.

Pardon the pun.
