When KTRB moves to the Bay Area later this year, Modesto will be left with its replacement, KPMP (840).

According to the "Modesto Radio Museum" folks, the format will be Big Band music, Old Radio shows and assorted Nostalgia programming. For additional information, click on the link below and check out the fourth paragraph under the title "Modesto Radio History Museum":

KPMP sounds like a great station to listen to but unfortunately I can't see the entire community supporting it. I maybe wrong and I hope I'm wrong but I just don't see huge ratings for this station. If the Central Valley can't support a Fulltime Classical Music Station, I can't see anyone supporting this type of station, though Adult Standards KVIN does do good ratings? Such an eclectic format for a commercial radio station.

I had lunch with Cal Purviance and other members of the Modesto Radio Museum's board two weeks ago, and they lovingly refer to KPMP as "K-Pimp."

I suggested that the legacy KTRB call letters would have more meaning if they remained in Modesto where they belong (moving them to 840), with the relocated 860 station getting new calls.

DJ, I wholeheartedly agree with you. The KTRB calls belong to Modesto.I think 860 San Francisco should have new calls. Alot of people I have talked with also thinks the KPMP calls stands for "K-PIMP" when in reality it stands for K-"Pete" and "Mike" "Pappas".

AMEN! KTRB doesn't mean spit to Bay Area people, unless they migrated from Modesto. Let the "pimp" run loose when 860 moves to SF!

Similar situation happened in Stockton 44 years ago

A similar situation happened here in Stockton. The station was KRAK-1140. The original calletters were KGDM and they went on the air in 1926 and they were licensed for Stockton. In 1957, they upped their power to 50000 watts and changed their calls to KRAK. A year later they changed their format to Top 40 to compete with KSTN-1420. Despite having a stronger signal, KSTN whooped their butt. As with most small town 50000 watt radio stations, they were too big for Stockton and in 1962 they moved to Sacramento as well as change their format to Country and Western, a format they kept until 1994.Now I am waiting for another Modesto area 50000 watt radio station, KCBC-770 to make their move.

That KCBC-770 change is never going to happen in our lifetimes!

Regardless of what the letters stand for, they are referring to the station as "K-Pimp."
