Ink In Tennessean About Inevitable Citadel/Cumulus Dual Divesture

Look at the bright side. The writer did get the call letters and formats right. That's the first time I have ever seen that correct in that waste of a rag formerly called a newspaper.

Anyone wanna take PBR buying bets on to whom the two stations will be "sold?"

Love the fact that the article appears to say they'll sell the 97.1 because it's #17th or whatever. Makes perfect sense to sell off a 50kw station because of it's format....

Plaster will be interesting. I would not have wanted to be in the gym the day he got news the sell could go down.

Hmmm. Maybe CC should take SIX Sports....

Appropriate that this article should appear on April 1.

I still think South Central is about ready to bite. They have been holding their cards very close, but this is the time...especially in a market that does really well for them.

Not only is the Tennessean incredibly slow in getting this news out, the article plays Dickey's quotes as though they were fresh... bad, bad, bad Tennessean.

The articles were cutting edge for the TN-an. And best of all they have brought Plaster front and center into the firing range. Nothing like unfair and unbalanced.

Eric - other than SC not saying a word and continuing to focus on being #1 and #2, what gives you the idea that they're thinking of buying these stations???

Nock - I am just really thinkin it's gonna be tough to decide --- do you bring back Lite AC as SM 95 or take on the triple rock combo (Jack, Buzz and The Rock) and bring back 103 KDF??? This time, I actually think Crums should not be original and start up an new moniker like they have in the past with such stolen stunners as:

Star, 0ldies, Beaver ...

Hey, sorry to spoil your party, but while all of you continue your speculations, remember people with jobs, livelihoods, families, children, and careers are on the line. Some of us give our hearts and souls to what we do everyday, and I speak for everyone working in Nashville radio when I say that... or at least I hope I do. Don't get too excited about any of this. It will affect people... broadcasting professionals in both camps. Some/many of these people aren't even on the air, and work the hardest to keep this medium alive, relevant, and lucrative.

Y'all have got to remember that the newspaper industry is just like the radio industry in that they, too, are trying to do more with less. And like us, they are all about seeing how cheaply they can do something, rather than how well they can do it. They, too, have had jobs eliminated by consolidation, and they also have situations in which one overworked, underpaid, employee is trying to do all the jobs that were once done by several people. Gannett is the Clear Channel of the newspaper industry. I don't think that journalists are intentionally sloppy in their reporting, or that they don't care to get the facts right, but rather, that they are overworked, just like many broadcasters are. (At least, the ones of you who are still in broadcasting.)

If you are still in the industry, more power to you! :) ;)

Fire - it's sadly hard to find any business (corporate or private) where the hours haven't gotten long, the work overloaded or the pay deminished. It's the NEW American way. (Unless you're in the government where it's still 40 hours a week, vacations and great benefits...that's an argument for another post, I guess.) But, that being said --- there is still no excuse for blatant
false reporting and innaccurate statements regardless of workloads. Purely unacceptable. I can tell you that I have done many interviews over the years and certain papers always get it 95% right and one paper gets it 95% wrong. The Tennessean is a, uh, SHELL, of what it was and it is
not acceptable. I couldn't believe that they took a picture of Plaster and plastered it on what's left the Metro section. What did they (or anyone) gain from bringing up old dirt and old news on this subject and then taking guesses as to what might happen when Crums takes over. It's not journalism - it's predicting the future with a bunch other people guesses and comments. Jack is right. Lot's of people's futures are riding on this. I may be wrong, but I have to believe, in good faith, that Cumulus will see the value of those that were once with them and be fine with what they have accomplished since they left and leave them alone and treat them fair so they can help pay back this insane debt load. None of us knows what will happen, yet. To have that rag of a has been newspaper that's now 1/10 of the volume it was waste half almost a full page on this is proof that they can't find anything important to write about. But somehow, they managed to get attention pointed in the direction of a few people and this market, that would have been better left off the radar screen.

Jack doesn't post often, but when he does, it comes from the heart.

So many of us live, eat and breathe radio... unfortunately, it's still not enough for today's radio. We're just numbers, regardless of how much we care about the business. And Cumulus is acquiring another debt that can only be paid off if they reduce staff. It will happen, but the ones making the most money will be the first to go. The CEO's want to continue making what they made before the Wall Street Bubble burst, and they will find ways to do it.

Yes Jack is 100% right! I know first hand how hard it is to go from a life in broadcasting to a life out of it. Things as we know it will never be the same and a lot of good hard working folks will be out on the street looking for anything! Take it from me get a back up plan in the works NOW and dont think you are safe...no matter what people will say! Good luck!

Another example of this is how the Tennessean reported Hope Hines retirement from Newschannel 5. Hines announced on Thursday night's 10 'o'clock newscast that he was retiring after 40 years of covering sports in July of this year and that Thursday night was his last 10 PM Sports report and that he would only be on the air for the 6 PM newscast and Sunday Sports Central until July when he leaves the air for good. The Tennessean didn't report this until Sunday and then stated that they were able to CONFIRM Hope Hines' retirement on Saturday afternoon, yet he announced his retirement HIMSELF on the 10 PM Newscast.
