Inland Empire Market Boundaries

Where can I find some information about the intra-county boundaries for these markets?
1. Palm Springs
2. Riverside-San Bernardino
3. Victor Valley

Of course, the Arbitron website displays which counties and portions of counties are in the Metro and Total survey areas for each market.

If I have counted correctly there are 13 total intra-county boundaries in these 2 counties

San Bernardino 7 intra-county boundaries
West Outer - West Inner
West Outer - West Remainder
West Inner - West Remainder
West Inner - West Y-Split
West Remainder - West Y-Split
West Remainder - East
West Y-Split - East

Riverside 6 intra-county boundaries
West Inner - Central North
West Inner - West Outer
Central North - West Outer
Central South - West Outer
Central North - East
Central South - East

This map is the only one I can find showing boundaries.
http://www.arbitron.com/downloads/Arb_US_Metro_Map_12.pdf
Even when zoomed in, it is not designed to show specifics of the actual routes of the boundaries.

Does anyone know where to find specific information about the boundaries?

Thanks in advance for any help.

The Arbitron site has a PDF map of the US with market borders. I am not sure if that is what you already found. That is the only map or definition commonly available.

A subscriber could get the actual ZiP codes covered in the MSA out of the PPM Analysis Tool.

Or, go to www.americanradiohistory.com and select the Ratings section and the Arbitron option. Part way down the right hand column are the last several such maps.

Those parts of the survey area are sampling units, and some are embedded inside others.

Thanks for the suggestions. The link at americanradiohistory brings up the identical zoomable national map which is available at the Arbitron site.

Thanks for mentioning the embedded markets, which I recently learned about.

I am not a subscriber, so do not have access to the PPM analysis tool.

Mister Guru, if you are an Arbitron customer you can see detailed market maps at http://www.arbitron.com/home/ebook_intro_site/marketinfo.htm

...or David could log in and copy them all and send them to you. :D

First time I have been addressed as Mister Guru, I kinda like it.

I am not an Arbitron customer. I want to be scrupulous in not violating anything which may be considered copyrighted material or proprietary information of Arbitron or its subscribers, so while your suggestion to obtain them from a customer is well-intentioned, I am sure, that is not what I want to do.

The project I am currently working on is preparing maps of markets, comparing Metropolitan Statistical Areas, Combined Statistical Areas, Urbanized Areas, Nielsen DMAs, and Arbitron Radio markets.

Would anyone know a particular person at Arbitron whom I could contact to seek permission to have access to the precise intra-county boundaries in counties which are split? There are actually quite a few, from coast to coast.

Thanks for the help

I address almost everyone on message boards as "Mister." Well.....all the men at least. You can try e-mailing Arbitron and explaining your project:

It has been my experience that inquiries directed to a named person usually get a better response than to generic email addresses such as "radioquestions".

If anyone knows the proper individual at Arbitron, please let me know. Thanks.

1. Palm Springs

Palm Springs is the Coachella Valley from Whitewater to Coachella, falling short of Mecca, Thermal, etc. It does not include areas "over" the mountains like Yucca Valley.

3. Victor Valley

Towns of Adelanto, George, Victorville, Yucca Valley, Joshua Tree, Yermo, Barstow, Baker, Mountain Pass but not including Essex, Big River, Apple Valley, Lucerne Valley, Hesperia.

Not sure officially, but for all practical purposes, the "boundry" of the Berdu/Riverside market is Kellogg Hill. Where signals go to die.

Thanks for the "practical boundary". Of course, if we are talking about the same Kellogg Hill, near the intersection of the 10, 57, and 71, that is well inside L.A. County, and there are many miles to go eastward across our "Orphan" Arbitron area San Bernardino County West Outer before entering the Riverside-San Bernardino market.

The precise location of this boundary is one of my questions.

I am no expert here, but at one time read that the 15 freeway was roughly the west boundary of the IE market. Of course I have also read that Fontana and Rialto are not counted in the IE ratings, which would go against the 15 freeway boundary. In terms of ZIP code definition, that would also play to the 15 freeway idea based on the change of zip codes in Rancho Cucamonga/Ontario to Fontana and points east. Rancho Cucamonga and Ontario have Zips that start 917__. Once you cross the line into Fontana and the heart of the IE, Zip codes start 923__, 924__ for San Bernardino proper, and 925__ for Riverside. Basically the change from 91 to 92 in the zip system could be seen as a major regional dividing line by the USPS. The meaning of that to arbitron though... ???

The IE market goes east to Banning, south to Hemet, west to Corona, and north to beyond Big Bear and Arrowhead. What it does not include is the foothills from around the 15 to the LA County border.
