Inmigrante TV launches in Phoenix

Inmigrante TV has launched in Phoenix as a subchannel of KTAZ, channel 39.2. Founded in February 2010 by Manuel Solis, a Houston immigration attorney, the TV network aims to provide news and opinion to the Spanish-speaking community. At this point, however, programming is largely advertising for Solis' immigration law practice.

The channel already airs in other large Hispanic markets: Los Angeles, Chicago, Houston, Dallas and Harlingen, Texas, including two stations each in the Dallas and Houston markets. KTAZ is the eighth station online, and the fourth owned by Telemundo. Other Telemundo stations are WSNS-TV Chicago, KXTX-TV Dallas and KTMD Galveston/Houston. Inmigrante TV airs on three Liberman stations: flagship KCRA Riverside/Los Angeles, KMPX Decatur/Dallas and KZJL Houston. Barrington Broadcasting provides the other home: KGBT Harlingen TX.

So far, Liberman has not picked up the network for a KVPA-LP subchannel.

Launching your own TV subchannel network - I guess the immigration law business is pretty good. Will we be seeing a Manuel Solis Stadium or Arena any time soon?

...oddly, KHRR/40 Tucson isn't on board. In fact, they have no subchannels at all...

So far, Inmigrante TV is only in top-10 Hispanic markets - #1 Los Angeles, #4 Houston, #5 Chicago, #6 Dallas/Ft. Worth, #8 Phoenix and #10 Harlingen/Brownsville/Weslaco. The Hispanic population in #2 New York and #3 Miami are well-established and don't have the immigration issues as other markets. Look for expansion into #7 San Antonio and #9 San Francisco/Oakland/San Jose before others. Tucson comes in at #25, so I'd be surprised to see KHRR having the subchannel any time soon.

I would argue that San Antonio's Hispanic population is also very well-established. Many 2nd generation Hispanic there don't speak much Spanish. As for immigration issues, it wasn't a big deal when I lived there in the early 2000's.
