Inovonics David IV

Have a demo for a client right now. Just got it today, will report more fully in the coming days.

So far... Damn, for the price it's a nice sounding box! Does a lot too, with built in HD delay. Is it going to blow away an Omnia 11? Nope, but for under $3 grand, so far I'm pretty impressed.

The limiter can be a bit pumpy when pushed hard, and there are no controls for the attack/release times on the multiband, just a drive control and individual drive controls for each band. AGC needs a dual speed to recover faster between hyper compressed cuts and older material with some dynamic range.

There's plenty of bass to be had, and the highs are surprisingly clean.

More to come as I torture it in the next few days.

Please share you opinions and results with us. I'm very interested in the box and would like to know where it stands compared to the One and the 5500...

The David has nice features, including an easy to set up remote control. In my opinion, the David's weakness is processing voice. To me it sounds terrible on voice, but pretty good on music. To be fair, I did not try to customize the settings to improve the voice handling, just tried various on-board presets.

I'll look into posting some MPX files in the future. Right now I don't have MPXTool or a 192kHz sound card (can only go to 96kHz on the Echo Layla) so it's not possible to do that at the moment.

I can post a L/R file of the decoded MPX somewhere when I get the chance.

I never use a stock preset. 5 minutes into it I'm rolling my own preset. In my mind, the presets are jumping off points, not final destinations.

Yes, that was my first order of business after unpacking it.

I was going to use the L/R of the demodulated MPX coming from the Belar FMM2. Using the HD outputs doesn't give you an idea of what it sounds like on the air.

I'm from the camp that believes human voice is far harder to make sound good than music is. I was spoiled by what FM voice sounded like 40 years ago before the loudness wars...not much has sounded that good since.

So far, with moderate settings, voice sounds pretty clean. Still haven't had a chance to upload any files yet, am swamped this week and probably won't get to it until next week.

I'm still not sure for the price whether I would go for it or spend a little bit more for an Omnia.One. What I'm not impressed with is the lack of control on the multiband section. No way to change attack/release settings, platform rate, freeze gate etc. All of those things are available on the One, and with the new firmware on the One that has the 5th limiter band for FM, the ducking issues are fixed.

Jury is still out... more listening this weekend.

Did you ever get to your weekend playtime?...

I was actually about to start a thread asking about this box. I guess the pumping issues could be a deal-breaker if they can't be tweaked out at the desired level of processing. Most importantly, how does it handle today's hypercompressed crap?

Also, is it louder out of the box than some older processors without running composite clipping?

Hi WNTI,
Great to hear you're putting the unit through it's paces and that you're already running the Rev 2 Update! Are you running the HD Delay option too? Oh, and are you using a factory preset, or have you got to tweaking your own?

Regarding the option to go in and change attack/release settings etc…. We've opted to keep those types of controls "behind the curtain" by design. For example, when you're moving a slider in the Multiprocessor you're doing more than just simply changing a gain: there are a number of things going on in the background, and we think that's a positive:)…what are you hearing?

I'm hearing pumping, especially on the bass. Also, sometimes the low end modulates with the bass notes.

I haven't been able to upload any clips yet, I picked up a new client on Monday and have been taking care of them.

The "advanced" controls would be nice for more expert users. I understand wanting to keep it simple for most, but I'm used to Omnia, Orban and Vorsis/Wheatstone where everything is out if you want to use it.

Hi WNTI,
Thanks for your response. Can you tell me what preset you are using, and what passage of what song you are hearing it on? Depending on the "Rumble" or "Punch" settings you might try backing off a bit and see if that does the trick...

Oh, and congrats on the new client, new work is always good thing :).

I just bought this unit as a backup since my omnia one went bad last week. So far im thinking on keeping this unit as my main and keepng the omnia as a backup. So far for my the sound has been great. It has been on the air for over 24 hours. Next week i will be tweeking it more. I need to find a way to make it sound big. Right now it sounds very clean and loud. The settings on my omnia one made my station sound almost as big of the other stations in the area without a 15k budget and 100,000 wats vs 100 watts. But to get here it took months of tweeking. Any sugestions?

contact Lukas hurwitz or anyone at Inovonics support. You say it sounds clean and loud, not sure what you mean by big. What caused the One to lay down on you?

Big to me means a little fuller sound. It sounds a little thin compared to the omnia. as for the omnia going bad, The omnia was not saving any presets adjustments, it was giving me errors. After i reboot it, it got stuck on the boot screen and never came back to life. Factory will probably need to do a software restore.
