Inovonics Rod AM Antenna

I've been curious about this Inovonics antenna for a long time. From what I can tell it appears to be broadband since it doesn't have any tuning associated with it. I was hoping to pair one up with my spare Inovonics 520 mod monitor but haven't even seen one in the wild.

I've been able to locate the circuit for its preamp in a document but the actual antenna is described in the schematic as a "coil of mystery" with no values given.

Any suggestion on replicating this circuit (or advise to go in another direction) would be considered helpful.

Why not build a loop antenna? They are simple to build and their performance is probably better than a 'coil of mystery.'
The Inovonics preamp could probably be used with a loop antenna.

@frankberry: I have plans for loops and all of them need to have a capacitor connected to optimize them for desired portion of the band you wish to receive. The Inovonics antenna appears to be sideband to the point where there is no tuning required for, what I'll call "acceptable" performance across the AM band. I'd like to mount the antenna up high and still have the ability to tune across the band with the mod monitor and listen not only to the target station but to its competition.

With a preamp and a good number of turns, you won't need to resonate the loop. I built one many years ago and used it for NRSC occupied bandwidth testing. It worked nicely.

That's a great thought. Any suggestion for a physical size and what would be considered a good number of turns? I'm not against experimenting but if you happen to recall what you did it would make a nice starting point.

I wasn't aware of the product. Thanks for the link. It looks similar to the few pictures of the Ino antenna I was able to find on the net.

For mw AM, I've never found any broadbanded antenna to be anywhere near as useful as an antenna where a true
high-Q tuned circuit comes first.

Good point, Tom, but I was hoping if I modeled the antenna after the Inovonics unit and use the same or similar preamp that it will work adequately.
