<INSERT NAME HERE> ENDORSES

Have you noticed on WPRO's website at times there's an ad on top titled Dan Yorke Endorses, John DePetro Endorses, Buddy Cianci Endorses, Matt Allen Endorses? I don't think I've ever seen one for Ron but they rotate so I could have missed it. So what does everyone feel about endorsements like this, especially given the public image problems the station is having?

If it brings in revenue thats always good. Given the recent events on The Trail. I wouldn't want my company associated with professionals
who act like babies. Or mess around with Arbitron. Maybe the GM Dealer in Woonsocket should give Matt Allen the latest model Escalade to drive instead of the morning guy.

"For all your [category] needs..."

Tip for Matt, for that home improvement advertiser's spot: Insert ONE word:
Instead of saying "MY FAMILY" [has patronized the advertiser's wares for years], say "MY ENTIRE FAMILY."

"MY FAMILY" puts you at-arm's-length from direct experience. 'Sounds like you, personally, aren't a homeowner, and as though you're endorsing services your parents or aunts/uncles have purchased.

"MY ENTIRE FAMILY" sounds like this advertiser's work is SO good that your family has used 'em at multiple addresses.

It's not about how WE feel about these endorsements, it's how the CLIENT feels.

It may be how the client feels when it comes to getting them on board as a sponsor but in the long run it is how the listener feels. When it comes to big name celebrities it doesn't take much disgrace in the news for a product to drop the person as a spokesman. Local is another matter naturally because it's all on a smaller scale. Personally even though I'm in radio I don't put much stock in any endorsements although I do know most won't endorse a product they don't really believe in.

In the current economic climate, if the client is paying, the spots/endorsements are runnning, regardless of how the listener "feels". If there is no ROI for the client based on how the listener feels, then those endorsements will end, but not by choice of the station.

Wages are so low at WPRO these endorsements are probably needed income for the announcers.

For the most part low wages are not an issue with the ones doing the endorsing. It's the ones not doing the endorsing.

It's not "a paycheck." It's A PLATFORM.

At lots of stations -- and some networks -- the lion's share of talent's W2 final-final is non-salary income, i.e., spot fees, ratings bonuses, appearance dough.

I took a (slight) pay CUT to leave WSPR/Springfield for WPRO in '74. 6 years later, I think my salary had only grown $20 a week. But we were making MULTIPLES of our salary on nightclub gigs, because (repeat after me) "Pro Personalities are frequently compensated for their appearances." The union didn't have a PRAYER of getting in there.

The transmitter isn't "the end," it's "the means," baybeeeeeeeeee...

Cookie giving Matt Allen advice...isn't that precious??

What's the difference between Matt Allen and Dave Barber?

Matt does a nice job. Dave has a nice job.

As the MasterCard ad says...

Or, as the MasterCard ad says, "priceless."

For another 22 minutes of Sales-related HC BS -- including some recommendations for copy points in endorsement spots -- here's the audio/video that we served-up, with lunch, to just-under-100 local retailers a-week-ago-yesterday in Texas:

Good afternoon from Washington, where LOTS of folks are roaming around in Red Sox garb...

Looks like Depetro won't be driving a Cadillac anymore. General Motors dropped the Woonsocket dealership from selling the brand. Now we'll get to hear how Depetro likes driving the new Buick or GMC Truck. LOL!!

"Sitting in for John..."

And speaking of John...

'Had a chance to hear a good dose of WPRO's morning show today, and I think the Tara dissers here are being a little tough on her.

She holds-down-the-fort pretty darn well.
Tara could've been an able sidekick voice to Salty himself, back-in-the-day.
And when-sitting-in-for-John, she keeps-the-wheel-spinning darn ably.

If anything, I'd like to hear her sound ever-so-slightly less "careful" when she solos.
She seems respectfully soft-spoken when she's there alone.
But, by now, listeners know-her-well-enough that she shouldn't feel self-conscious at all.

And, yes, I offer all-of-the-above knowing full-well how compliments here tend to provoke yet-more anonymous spitballs.

HAPPY FOURTH,
HC
