Inside Radio: PPM panelists are rapidly fatiguing.

Part of this is habitual. When I leave the house, I know I have my cell phone, watch, keys, wallet, jump drive etc. It's difficult to add another "device" to the ritual and sometimes people forget they have these things... they end up sitting in the docking station all day.

I have a second beeper that I use only when I am on call for a specific station. I find that I have to write myself a reminder to leave it with the keys with a fresh battery so I won't forget it on the day(s) I need it.

If you are still defending oldies, you had best hope that Arbitron figures out how to fix this... as the whole decision to relaunch CBS-FM was based on the success of WOGL in Philly in the PPM; in the diary WOGL was a half-dozen positions in rank below what it has achived in the PPM, and the same would, logically, apply to CBS-FM.

NY begins PPM measurements in 50 days.

Allan Sniffen from today (I usually disagree, but here he is correct).

If it's true that participants in the radio ratings can't even be bothered to undock their PPM's and carry them around, what does that imply about the outgoing diary system? It really makes you wonder how seriously people ever took filling out diaries. That involved a LOT more of a commitment. If they're not willing to passively carry a small device around, did participants ever really fill out those diaries?

The PPM's should be a leap forward. Short of embedding a chip under your skin (g), how much easier can it get? If people can't be bothered to do at least that much, it makes the entire idea of randomly surveying listeners questionable.

You will need this to be fixed more than anyone else. Radio's business plan is based around Arbitron.

I wouldn't worry about CBS-FM. With what was generated with the flip back, it would take a disaster to get them to consider something else. Right now, it is one of the safest stations in the city. Every now and then, you do find something that is bigger than the monster that is the radio business model. Here, it is the brand that is CBS-FM and it has actually adapted itself quite well.

Speaking of which... I thought CBS-FM was classic hits? Why do you classify it as oldies all of the sudden?

I didn't. I said YOU were a defender of oldies stations... I did not say one way or another what WOGL and WCBS are (they are self classified for Arbitron as Classic Hits, by the way). Please reread my statement: you like oldies, and even stations that are "todays" oldies or classic hits will be killed if the PPM does not work.

Since the PPM and the diary are approved by the agecy supported MRC, all that will happen is that Arbitron will have to improve pánel performance or increase panel size... the agencies trust the survey... it is radio that is unhappy right now.

I re-read your statement:

"If you are still defending oldies, you had best hope that Arbitron figures out how to fix this... as the whole decision to relaunch CBS-FM was based on the success of WOGL in Philly in the PPM"

Your statement indicates that CBS-FM and WOGL are oldies stations. Incorrect.

Then there is what Bob Neil from Cox Radio said today

Cox Radio's Bob Neil says in public - on today's 11am ET 2Q conference call - what he's been saying in private. Namely, that Arbitron's troubles with People Meter sampling and its alleged failure to sufficiently educate advertisers will lead to angry radio station clients. Neil says "They better start getting the hot lead ready [meaning bullets], because the people with pitchforks will be outside their front door."
