Inside Radio: WLIB Still In Play - Let's Make A Deal

Is it a bidding war for WLIB, New York? And could Air America wind up extending its lease past August 31? That’s the way Inside Radio now hears it – and that WLIB owner Inner City doesn’t have an agreement with Randy Michaels. Nobody’s talking, but it sounds like Inner City’s interested in maximizing its long-term lease revenue, not long after signing a short-term renewal with Air America.
http://www.insideradio.com/topheadline.asp?ID=431205&PT=Today%27s+Top+StoriesFull Disclosure: Clear Channel owns Inside Radio. Brian Maloney writes a commentary column for Inside Radio.Still, Inner City Broadcasting has at least two parties interested in leasing WLIB. The idea of an auction for the LMA is not far-fetched. But if AAR gets themselves sucked into a bidding war they are even dumber than I give them credit for being. Reporteldy, the current LMA deal gives Inner City Broadcasting $2.5 million per year plus half of any station revenue over $2.5 million. It's a bad deal. AAR was lucky their other LMA's collapsed and now they have standard affiliation/syndication deals in Chicago and LA. Make nice with Michaels and they can still get two, maybe three, shows cleared in New York. Instead, management is driven by ego to make an even worse deal than the one they have now. But I suppose the Drobny's can afford it.

Latest from AAR

NY Daily News: Air America will carry onThe progressive talk network Air America says it "will not go silent on the New York City airwaves," following a report in Radio Business Report that WLIB (1190 AM) will switch to other programming when Air America's lease there expires Aug. 31.Air America declined further comment on "hypothetical speculation." If the report is true, the network must find another station in a tight market.Radio Business Report says WLIB, Air America's flagship, will carry a different progressive lineup with some local hosts.
Typically, AAR's statement is vague and not forth-coming. It could mean:
  • They will win the bidding war for WLIB
  • They will broker or lease another station in the New York market - almost certainly one of the "also-rans."
  • Randy Michaels will continue to clear some AAR programs on WLIB.
  • Or none of the above. AAR had "gone silent" in LA and Chicago and then came back when somebody else realized: (1) They might make money with progressive talk. (2) They could take programming from AAR (and other sources).
AAR's press releases in the face of any "bad news" have the ring of public pronouncements of a politician who has been caught. AAR needs a good PR firm. Or more likely, they have a good PR firm and they should listen to it.

Oh, please. What do you want them to say? Apparently, they're still trying to work out a deal to continue the LMA for WLIB. If that doesn't work out, they'll try to get on another station in the market or convince Michaels to run some of their shows. Are you really suggesting that it would be good PR to say this publicly? My take is that a "good PR firm" would tell them to say exactly what they have said.

Yes.

Which pretty much says Inside Radio is now a worthless rag. To even give this clown a "commentary column" when he has his own fictional newsblog is just tracking mud onto another website.I have no interest in worrying about what Mr. Baloney has to say about WLIB because virtually everything he's said so far has turned out to be wrong.

The story about WLIB did not appear in Brian Maloney's column.
