Inside the Spring numbers

18-34

1. WJBT
2. WAPE
3. KISS
4. WPLA
5. WFYV

25-54

1. WQIK
2. WSOL
3. WFYV
4. WJGL
5. WOKV

Station by station based on 12+ rank

WQIK- Also #1 25-54.

WOKV- Down three months in a row. If the slide doesn't stop, WOKV will have a 6 share in the next trend.

WSOL- Tom Joyner's still number one overall in the morning.

WJBT- The Beat could be in the top 2 by Summer.

WJGL- The Eagle got a good month in June to stay in the top 5 overall and 25-54.

WEJZ- Not being in the top 5 25-54 isn't good, and being #5 25-54 10am-3pm isn't either for the "at work" station.

WAPE- Ape wins the most listeners award. They just don't listen as long as they used to.

WFYV- Lex and Terry are #1 25-54 in the morning. As highlights go, that's it.

WFKS- Clear Channel must like being 2nd to Ape. Kiss's MJ show did beat the Ape Morning Zoo again 18-34 for the consolation prize.

WPLA- What's up with Planet? One big problem is the Monsters in the Morning. They're #12 overall and not even in the top 5 18-34!

WBGB- The Promise showed a nice increase in June and almost broke into the top 10.

WMXQ- We're number 12! The Point's "taking it to a new level" up from #13.

WJSJ- Smooth Jazz. See below.

WKQL- That's right, Kool got beat by the Smooth Jazz station. Renda has just shown anyone paying attention how not to switch formats.

WHJX- Urban. See below.

WROO- That's right, Rooster just got beat by an Urban station with a weak signal. Last time around this station was described as a redundant waste of power. Now what?

WZAZ- Gospel AM. Haven't heard it yet, but will right after familiarizing myself with The Promise.

WGNE- Froggy, er, Gator, no wait... Had a great June and is the reason why Rooster's due at the funeral home. Mburg must be doing backflips because Whatever Country is #18!

WFXJ- The winner of the sports stations war over WZNZ.

Bottom line, despite direct new competition, Clear Channel wins with 'QIK, Cox takes WAPE to a full one share increase and number one in cume. Renda has a good June with Gator and packs the house for their 1st free show! Heather takes Salem into a record breaking June with the Promise. Time to uncork the bottle!

Cheers from the Soup!

Sorry Soup. I checked. Heather didn't start with Promise until the first week of JULY. Spring ratings ended in JUNE. Would have loved to giver her the credit.

Gee NOYFB, you stole all the good one-liners! There's not much left for the rest of us!

An interesting turn of events which are only starting to unfold with some of these stations. For example, WROO did have a real bad June along with WGNE having a pretty good June. If that trend continues with the same momentum WGNE could very well beat WROO in the summer book. BUT, that doesn't necessarily mean the end of WROO. Some of you had predicted that WGNE would take a bite out of WROO and whereas that may be true at this point, note that WQIK went up even further in its quest for even stronger showings. If WROO wasn't a factor, it might take away from WQIK's mega-numbers. Yes, speculation, but certainly possible.

WFKS is doing a great job keeping WAPE from returning to the top of the heap. In 18-34, WFKS is right on WAPE's ass!

This spring, Clear Channel looks to be the big winner here, even with WROO and WPLA in the dumpster. Cox is struggling for the most part. WAPE, WFYV and WMXQ all need a real good overhaul if they ever want to be close to where they once were. Renda is indecisive and needs to really get their ducks in a row. My religion prohibits me from saying anything negetive about Salem!

So, who's a good candidate for a format flip? The Point, certainly. That station has run its course just like all of the other similarly programmed 80's stations.

Planet? Maybe. The folks that work there have worked hard at trying to get it on track but maybe it's too late in the game.

What might work? There's an AC void to be filled. The Dove (see: Tampa). And yes, JACK! I'm not really a JACK fan, but some of these trendy execs might take the bait.

Considering WGNE only had 6 weeks in the book taking that many listeners from WROO is pretty impressive!

Even though Heather wasn't part of the good June trend you have to figure that adding her to the morning show will certainly help going forward. She and Gary sound great together. I think Heather sounds better on the Promise than she did (at least towards the end)on COOL...a bit more relaxed and natural, more like she sounded before the Rainman started putting the clamps on COOL's personalities. Or maybe its because she doesn't have Dave Scott's foot on the back of her neck anymore:) Gary is taking excellent advantage of having a quality partner and is sounding better than ever. He is a gifted talent. The music is pure AC in sound and if you can deal with the not-so-overstated message it is very listenable. I doubt they'll ever be #1 but they may grab a big enough piece of the pie to warrant the attention of Lite 96.1 and anyone else going after the family-friendly crowd.

I love reading stuff like this...but of course, I'm biased (Heather's my wife).

It's true that she didn't start until July 5th, so they improved all by themselves. I can't see how having Heather on there can hurt at all, either.

She's loving the new job, and they're really working hard to improve the visibility of the station and really make it a player - stranger things have happened in a Bible Belt town with a commercial Christian station.

A funny side note:
Gary Walsh - Heather's co-host - was known throughout his professional career as "Dave Scott" until he came to Jacksonville when the Promise launched. Our Dave Scott's presence forced him to change his name. So, essentially, Heather just switched Dave Scotts.

Spring numbers

YOU are the king of re-caps. Thanks for the great overview.

And BTW- if anybody gets the stones to go southern gospel on FM, it will be a home-freakin'-run.

Well, I have to take issue with noyfb's notion that WJBT could be in the top 2 by summer. I just dont see that happening. I do agree that planet could come back, if they ditch the Monsters. PLANET JACK? Although I hate the JACK thing, its out there to be looked at. WKQL, despite what was written by our thread starter, was obviously a good move since Arrow was getting beat by AM stations. Sure, I think they are happy being beaten by a Smooth Jazz station....for now. Also, keep in mind that Tom Murphy didnt have much time to impact things either. WEJZ working hard to prove that there are other "at work" options. Someone over there needs to figure something out. Congrats to Promise on their showing, and its agreed that Heather can only help things over there. The morning show is sounding better than ever. Now if they could just do something with that weak ass sports station! And we all know that all it takes is one disaster and Dorwarts non-stop 24 hour overkill to bring OKV back into shape. Did I mention that its hurricane season? Hey it sounds silly, but it works and M.D. knows it. And although the "breakdown" here is pretty simple, WHJX is up in listeners altogether, if you look at the book a little closer. So congrats to those folks and their "weak" signal. As far as the KISS/APE thing, I mean seriously, does anyone really care? They continue to make money for their respective owners. Its the same old song and dance. Besides, these two stations have been trading ratings and pimple faced fat kids for years, and thats just the airstaff. Over to the POINT, well, maybe the new PD hasnt really had time to turn that around...ok, well, you can stop laughing now. It was just a thought. By the way, has anyone heard what Mark Bell is up to? Again, Memo to COX Radio-Try a new promotions director. Even when POINT shows up to events, they arent there! Congrats to QIK again...and again. They keep doing it. How long has QIK had the airstaff lineup they have now? And they keep showing up at the top of the list....hmmmm (note to others, change may not be such a good thing after all) I am sure G.A. is taking all the credit for that, but uh, isnt there someone else actually programming QIK. Congrats John, and the air staff over there, since we know you wont get a pat on the back from Miss High N Mighty. But when the smoke clears between Rooster and Gator, could things change for QIK? Besides, shouldnt most of QIK's airstaff be retiring soon or something? Geesh! Lets talk about Rooster for a minute...nah, they are suffering enough (and yes, I am sure Mburg is happy this morning, with reason apparently) If Gator can get over the identity crisis they should go ahead and knock WROO into Real Radio reality. Or maybe "Jack" the Rooster....hmmmm Catchy and provocative! Theres some advertising for ya, "Should we Jack the Rooster?" Hey how is that Less is More thing working out for ya? A fairly interesting book this time around. Should we talk about some jobs on the block, or are we status quo until the next book? I think things are secure for now, just thought it might spark some talk...
