Insignia™ - HD Radio Tabletop Radio

Best Buy has them on sale in my local area and it's an excellent price. Thing is I'd like to be able to get a few more checks in my account (if they won't be gone tomorrow) so I was trying to wait until next week or maybe even the beginning of the month to purchase..Thoughts?

I've had that radio for quite awhile. It's only FM, and the sensitivity and selectivity are excellent. Stereo speakers..not bad sound for it's size. There are 20 presets. I've used the radio while traveling by bus and train, and you can get the HD stations within 30 miles of the city. It has RDS,as a nice bonus and an aux in. For $40 it's quite a good radio.

Just wish there were more HD stations out there.

Ben, I'm about 25 miles from the DFW antenna farm here in Keller. Wanted to get it because 1). KTCK "The Ticket" is rotten here on AM at sundown and so is Newsradio 1080. I'd be replacing an over 5 year old boombox that works well, but it's bulky on my countertop. Has anyone traveled with it? I'm going to frequent Oklahoma City later this year and for years to come and wondering how the reception was on outskirts of town (25, 30 miles away etc)

TheZak, I have heard audio quality is indeed excellent.

The audio quality is great! I'm in the Dallas market and on top of the usual stations I am getting:

Farthest stations so far:
(88.9 KETR) Commerce-100 miles
(92.9) KNIN) Wichita Falls-109 miles
(93.1) KMKT Sherman-Denison 95.9 miles
(95.3) KHYI) Howe-65 miles
(97.5) KLAK Tom Bean-81 miles
(99.9) KLUR Wichita Falls-111 miles
(102.5) KMAD Whitesboro-95.9 miles

This is what I have gotten so far. (I can get ESPN 103.3 but not in HD)

I picked one up at my local BB so I can listen to the two HD station in the Atlanta market worth listening to: WSB-FM HD2 and 97.1 the River's Edge (interestingly, only Cox bothers to do anything worthwhile on HD in this market. Makes sense, it is there hometown).

First impressions: decent performer on both analog and FM HD. The DSP works very well on analog, not sure what chipset this things uses but it has great selectivity. I am able to hear distant stations on 1st adjacent channels next to local powerhouses. It doesn't seem to get overloaded the way alot of cheap FM radios do (I live pretty close to downtown Atlanta).

The sound quality isn't going to win awards, but it is pretty good for a small radio. There are no tone controls, bass boost or any kind of EQ. What you get is what you get. It does have a headphone jack that has plenty of audio for driving most headphones, and it sounds good using a $20 pair of Sony MDR-V50 headphones I bought about 2 years ago. You could also use this as a line out to an audio system of your choice.

Ergonomics are decent, the controls are pretty straight forward. Didn't need to read the user guide. I do like the display, it's backlight is permanent, which I wish there was a way to turn it off (in a dark room it is quite bright), but it is very readable and the backlight is responsible for this. It has RDS (or RDBS) on FM analog as well. It comes with a whip antenna attached, but also has a 1/8" jack for an external antenna and includes a wire "pigtail" antenna.

It can run on 4 standard "AA" batteries, though I haven't run mine on batteries to see what the life span of a set would be. But at least you can run it off standard batteries if needed, not the proprietary lithium ion batteries found in other HD portables. A good idea for emergency use as you may not have AC power available.

This is the first HD radio I have outside my car, and if there was more programming instead of translator feeds in this market, it might actually be worth buying. Too bad none of the full power talk boxes like 92.9 the Lame and All News 106.7 who broadcast their spoken word on HD-1 don't bother putting any music on HD2.

What a waste. But this market sucks.

Again I have this radio but rarely use it because of 2 very big negatives to me. It does not have a remote so it makes using it in the living room inconvenient and does not have a coaxial antenna input which I need to get good HD reception with my attic FM antenna. If it had those 2 things I would hook it up to my Sherwood receiver.

I just found a new use for Insignia however which is connecting the output of the Sony XDR-F1HD that has much better reception because I can connect the attic antenna into the Insignia when my wife goes to bed. Since the Insignia has no bass it makes a soft enough sound not to wake a sleeping person down the hallway. The big floor speaker have too much bass.

The HD2 station I listen to Classical WUIS HD2 does not come in well enough without the attic antenna in the house.

It seems like HD Radios have very good selectivity (i.e. can get stations first adjacent to locals).

Any analog radio with comparable circuitry to an HD radio will blow it away as far as selectivity and range go, where are you getting your information?
