Insignia / MightyRed dead battery - with radio powered off???

JJS, absolutely right on both counts. I could have sworn it read "Yesterday" instead of the true posting date. And indeed I didn't see it back in January. Kindly strike the reply.

Funny this should come up because I was just thinking of how annoyed I was with this radio because of this issue. I only get 5 to 7 days of light to moderate use out of it before the battery dies and needs to be recharged. It's a pain and concerns me about how this radio will behave a year or two years from now. The thing could turn out to be disposable because of it.

Who's bright idea was it to install a permanent battery anyway? Why not a AAA? Dumb, if you ask me (and nobody did). ::)

It generally is cheaper to install an internal, non-removable battery, if you're going to go rechargeable. AA primary batteries would be cheaper overall, but maybe they didn't have room for that. They were probably pushed hard to design it for the absolute lowest cost.

Considering the battery life in modern electronics, that's no so bad. Too bad we're all comparing it to the battery life of regular analog radios. ;)

I was lucky to get a full 10 hour shift of listening in on my boombox under battery power, yet my old shortwave with analog tuning and a vacuum florescent display gets a month or more…

The Insignia radio is DEFINITELY designed to be disposable, which stinks. I would have gladly traded a little more weight and a backlit monochrome LCD screen and removable AA rechargeable slot for a few extra pesos.

My guess is that the digital decoding chips needed too much gas to run, so Li-Ion was the only lightweight soluation to putting 4 AA's for just 2 hours of listening time!
