Interesting bit on NERW

In RHODE ISLAND, fans of AHL hockey will have some dial-spinning to do to find the Providence Bruins this year. Instead of the decent-sized signal of WDDZ (550 Pawtucket), this year's P-Bruins have WARL (1320 Attleboro MA) as their flagship, with additional coverage on WNRI (1380 Woonsocket), WQRI (88.3 Bristol), WBLQ (88.1 Westerly) and Saturday games on WAKX (102.7 Narragansett Pier) - not one of which can be heard inside Dunkin Donuts Arena, we're pretty sure.

WAKX 102.7 Running PBruins hockey on Saturdays? Will they continue to program portuguese around AHL hockey? And if so... why?

This is why the interest in the P-Bruins has died in this area. They choose these second rate radio stations where there signal cant be picked up. They wonder why the stands are empty and no one cares. If they could get on a Providence station whose signal is decent maybe the interest would be better. Thats my 2 cents, what are anyone elses thoughts?

I think it's the exact oppisite. As the interest waned for the PBru's , the bigger stations were less interested. Why try to sell a team that just won't bring in the bucks to you, where a smaller station may have nothing and this is their main cache.

Just my $0.02

I posted this information a couple of weeks ago, concerning the Providence Bruins new radio stations. Pleas refer to the "Providence Bruins Broadcast Network" thread. I believe it's on Page 4 of the Providence Radio board.

Well my thread was hijacked but the question remains. Does PBuins hockey on the now Portuguese 102.7 signal a change for them? Davidson still owns the station correct? Are they leasing it out to someone else? If it remains Portuguese... why in the world PBruins hockey?

Maybe they will air the P-Briuns games in Portuguese in hopes of getting Portuguese speaking fans to listen. :)

Re: 102.7

I don't think the 1320 signal reaches the main 102.7 signal area.

It's probably a time-buy to help cover all of Rhode Island.

Re: Providence And P-Bruins

The most likely reason why the P-Bruins have such a low profile on the Rhode Island sports scene:

Providence College's men's basketball team is the only sports team in Rhode Island that plays during the Fall and Winter that has any real following among the Ocean State's "casual" sports fans.

I would think that between mid-November and March (exact date depends on whether the PC men's hoop team goes on to play in the NCAA's or NIT), PC men's basketball get lots more "ink" in the Projo and airtime in TV and radio sports reports than the P-Bruins or any other local sports team.

Therefore, I can understand why the P-Bruins got the radio deal they did. And whoever puts together the broadcasts probably struggles to get commercial time sold. By contrast, I suspect WSKO-790/99.7 and Cox 3 have no problem selling spots in their PC hoop broadcasts, and at premium rates compared to their other programming.
