Interesting.. Denver extreme rock station... why not here?

KBPI ... in my trip to denver in September last year... was nothing like i've ever heard, such hard rock, death metal (if that's politically correct) and other extreme types of rock, I was shocked to hear what they were playing when my nephew turned it on. Denver is a very "gothic-white" city I noticed. (Which now makes me understand why KS1075 sucks on the Urban side but that's another post previously.)

Chicago, a pretty conservative play-safe market, would a KBPI format work here? I don't think so. But I'm also not sure why Q101 never went this route. I think the only similar station close enough to it would be the former WVVX or WJJO 94.1 Madison back in the early 2000s. 95 WIIL Rock doesn't come close to KBPI.

After I gave a smart-alecky comment on the Q101 thread, I'll be a little more serious here.

KBPI can stay on in Denver because, for one thing, Clear Channel has in its Denver cluster every other flavor of rock format, which makes it possible for KBPI to push the envelope of what an active rock station can be. And if CC sells its rock stations in packages, it may be easier to fill KBPI with advertisers than it might be if it was the only rock station in the cluster and the classic rocker, AAA and modern rocker were owned by different companies.

KPBI sounds like just another Active Rock station, similar to WJJO from Madison. Actually neither station comes even close to the hardness of 'Rebel Radio' AM 1500 WPJX Zion, which sadly disappeared from the airwaves during February of this year. A softer version of Rebel is now streaming on the internet, and soon Rebel Radio will be airing every night on 'The Kat' 105.5 WYKT Wilmington, Illinois from 10:00 PM - 6:00 AM.

By the way, the Chicago area has had other Metal stations in the past besides WVVX: 'Z-Rock' 106.7 WZRC, 'G-Force 1330' WKTA, and 'Rebel Radio' which has aired thru the years at: 1240 WSBC, 1330 WKTA, 1430 WEEF, 1470 WCFJ, 1500 WPJX, 94.3 WJKL, 103.1 WVVX, and 105.5 WYKT.

I don't even know why WIIL is even mentioned here. Some people label that station 'Active Rock', but WIIL continues to play non-Active music like U2, Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers, Rolling Stones, Billy Squire, and Bon Jovi. The Program Director at that station really has alot to learn...

Rebel Radio at 1500 WPJX Zion was pretty crashy, weren't they?
I was told directly they had fried audio processors there by running all the levels way too hot.
I don't know if thats even possible, but that's what they told me at the station.

Now it's a fairly generic Hispanic format, like many others in the region.

1330 WKTA, 1430 WEEF, and 1500 WPJX studios are all in one house.

I don't think Chicago has nearly as many "youthful and alternative" minded people as Denver,
and the market considers itself "too important" to have fringe, niche formats.
