Interesting DX for me

A few days ago, I was heading towards I-5 south. From Livermore (SF Bay Area) I was able to pick up KRVN 880 from Nebraska. Near where I-580 and I-5 meet, I picked up 820 WBAP. I never thought that those stations from east of the Rockies would make it nearly to the SF Bay Area these days, with the AM band being all crowded and all. I tried to get WOAI 1200 too, but it was all static.

Especially in this day and age, WBAP is a pretty good catch that far west. I remember visiting Las Vegas in early April 2006 - and this is something I have posted about before - and catching WBAP about 1 a.m. PT. It's the only 50K station I have heard both in Vegas and Ohio.

I would think WOAI would be a given to hear in Las Vegas.

Here in Tampa, it's one of the consistently strong nighttime AM stations on the dial.

1210 WPHT doesn't come in nearly as strong and they are about the same distance from here.

............

Edited to add, I guess I should have realized the Gulf being inbetween has to do with the signal of WOAI.

I recall when WOAI was the *only* station on 1200 in the entire USA.

When I was stationed near Anchorage, AK, in late 70s, I was able to bag WOAI & KRVN among others. Sadly I only logged about 125 AM stations in 2 years total. Sometimes there's DX, sometimes not....even on AM.

I'm surprise that KOA wasn't into Vegas at 600 miles. They are a frequent visitor here about 80 miles from Ohio.

They are here in Tampa too and often overpower the station on 850 from south Florida.

KOA would even sound better if not for the WGUL splatter.

WOAI got cut off in the west when KYAA 1200 in the Santa Cruz area came on, I think it was sometime in the 90's?

KOA can be a hard catch for me because of hash from KTRB 860,about 30 miles away.

Both KRVN and WBAP have been caught here in Bothell, WA, under locals on excellent winter nights. KRVN's in the vicinity of 1200 miles, and WBAP is 1675 miles. I also have gotten KRLD 1080! :)

Good point, though KOA was blotted out in Vegas on my visit from the IBOC hash on their local 840 (and might still be). That actually was the first time I head IBOC at night.
