Interesting DXing observations at Clearwater Beach

Daytime winter DX is also common here in SE WI. In recent days, I've heard KTRS, WSM, WLW, WTAM & I think what might be KDKA (around the splatter from WNVR). The graveyard channels have some DX, too.

KTRS comes into my location about 30 miles north of Chicago durning the day strictly ground wave.

I second that. Low end of the band, over favorable ground conductivity makes 5000 watts go a long way. Tellingly, KMOX's groundwave is tougher to get up here than that of KTRS but their skywave is far, far stronger. One of the strongest on the band in this area.

The next few days are about the best opportunities that we'll have all year to catch daytime skywave. Especially in more northerly latitudes where the sun is lower. Had skywave all day long in Alberta during December 2008.

How far south could you get daytime skywave in Alberta? Were you able to hear anything from Chicago during the day?

The earliest (time of day/afternoon) skywave I have received and it is only from the last week of November to early January is that around 2:30 in the afternoon, WWNN 1470 from Pompano Beach will sometimes over-ride semi-local 1470 out of Dunedin, Fl.

I had never thought about 700 WLW during the afternoon; I'm a little s.s.w. of GarFla at latitude 27 47' north, so there is not much daytime skywave. Today and tomorrow sunrise here is 7:16am and sunset 5:40pm.

btw- for those trying to catch WWBA 820, they are 50,000 until 5:45pm this month and then resume 50,000 watts at 7:15am this month; the same goes for WHB) ESPN 1040; most other Tampa Bay stations are 7:15 - 5:30 for daytime hours this month. (WRXB 1590 and most of the Sarasota/Bradenton stations are also daytime until 5:45 this month.

I've had my radio on 700 for a couple hours now with the loop next to it as well and I haven't heard a thing.

I wish I could figure out if being near the Gulf had something to do with that skywave reception of WLW I heard early yesterday afternoon.

I haven't been able to receive anything on 700 yet today either......... it is one of the few clear frequencies in Florida as you mentioned........ no Cuban stations on that frequency receivable here , no Florida stations on that frequency...... just quiet.

Correction........ the 1040 in the Tampa Bay area I mentioned (licensed to Pinellas Park) in an earlier post is WHBO........not WHB.

No Chicago signals during the day, but I got a very stable KSL from noon onward and I had a series of others such as WZFG Fargo, ND (around midday); KEX Portland, OR (from morning until about 1 pm); KOMO Seattle (ditto); CHMJ Vancouver (most of the day); CKWX Vancouver (most of the day); and KOFI Kalispell (which may well have been groundwave). I was driving between Calgary and Edmonton - and drove back several days later.

By the way, CBK Watrous, SK was loud, strong and local throughout Alberta all day and night!

As for nighttime skywave, unfortunately I stayed in high rise hotels in either downtown (Calgary/Edmonton) and had no shot at skywave due to local interference and quite a few 10-50 kw blasters in each city. So, I couldn't tell you whether Chicago 50 kw signals were in or not. I'd be shocked if you couldn't get at least 1 or 2 outside of Calgary. Edmonton is farther.

On a separate Canada trip, I got a solid daytime (10 am - 2 pm) signal from WBBM when driving from Ottawa to Pembroke, ON and beyond - also in December (2007). None of the others though.

I wonder if in a place as far north as Edmonton you could get all day skywave from Alaska or other distances farther north. That would be interesting to find out.

Here in Charleston, skywave comes in often early in the afternoon, but not as early as farther north. Starting at around 3 (sunset at the latest here is around 5:13), stations from farther north come in.

WAGL, the 50kw from Lancaster, stays in all day during the winter, sometimes nearly as clear as the locals.

1500 from Washington is the first station that usually comes in, with the strongest signal. WBT stays in all day here during the winter, especially inland (closer to Charlotte). WCBS comes in early too, along with many of the Baltimore/Washington stations. WHAM comes in during this time period, weirdly when its overridden at night. By about 4:40, most of the Eastern and Southern clears are in.

The clears usually stay in until about 45 minutes after sunrise. WSB and WBT stay in the longest.

@Radioman148:

I was stationed near Anchorage AK from 1978-80. There was nothing really noticeable as far as all-day DX in the winter. I mentoned previously hearing CFRN Edm. at about 3pm, but this was a time when the sun set about 3:30-4:30pm.

Anchorage (and likely the rest of AK) can be unusual in that some days the DX (on AM) would come rolling in; other days, nada....I think that applied even in winter time.

I only logged about 125 AM stations over 2 years there. My radios weren't all that bad either; my Delco in my '75 Chevy was the best.

Then again, you have to consider how Alaska is so isolated.

If it had the same proximity to the amount of stations as are in the lower 48 and much of southern Canada, there should be daytime skywave catches all day in winter.

CD,

What was the furthest Lower 48 DX you heard in Alaska?
Also did you ever get any of the Chicago clears when you were there?

Thanks!

WWL was the farthest. WOAI came in as well. No Chicago or NYC.

I did bag 2 Hawaiians, 830 & 940. Mighta heard 650 on a rare night when KYAK (now KENI) was off, but unfortunately it went back on & killed that chance.

We have a member here who lived in Kodiak for a while, and had a Superadio II. He caught the New Zealand 567 or was it 576...about as far south as they come. I'll PM him for ya.

Hearing WWL in Alaska is quite a catch. I heard it in Hawaii in 1978.

From Kodiak Island I picked up WWL; WBAP, WOAI, and WBZ-1030 one night in June 1984. It was the Larry Glick show, I called in and he put me right on the air L! Had it on tape, but long-lost now...I believe I also logged WCBS once or twice.

Wow, WBZ?? Like WWL, they choose a directional array, and it sure wouldn't favor AK! Was the tape audible enough? I remember the Larry Glick show...began with children laughing at his name.

Hearing WCBS in Alaska is quite an achievement.

The tape didn't sound very good, BTW I was using an original GE SuperRadio1...Great set, lasted me over 20 years!
