Interesting format

We have some on this board who believe a Contemporary Christian format would work as a format change. Others believe a Classic Country show would be the way to go. I have come across a new station with a little bit of both. I believe you put a playlist like this with WRVR atmosphere here in Memphis along with Christian Rock on Saturday Nights for teenagers, it would be something for everyone. What do you think?

Ehhhh....

The problem is that the people who listen to Christian music are loyal to the music because of the content, not because of the sound. So the Country doesn't appeal to the KLove crowd. And I'd have to think the Christian content may alienate some Country fans.

I'd love to see a major station flip to Christian. The stations that have tried it in the past ten years have been undercut by bad management. But you should have seen the positive response to Praise FM (KSUD--94.7) before KLove bought it out. I think what hurt it was simply lack of exposure (well, that and an owner that was trying to sell it). Witnessing that response, I think a Christian station with a solid sales base behind it could do spectacular business.<P ID="edit"><FONT class="small">Edited by MemBirdman on 10/17/05 12:53 PM.</FONT></P>

I think we should always applaud attempted innovation. But, I am not sure this is a great mix.

Go to the website, and look at the playlist. Essentially, it's CCM and Rascal Flats. Country music is about life, warts and all. As David Alan Coe has put it, you have to talk about "trains, or trucks, or prison, or gettin' drunk." There isn't enough content to go around.

But, again, I am glad to see Entercom trying to mix it up, try something new. Good for them.

This is the station that former Memphis fixture Bob Mclain was at, wasn't it? Hope he landed on his feet.

Trust me, that question was yelled out far and wide when the sale went down. It still hurts me to know what could have been...

I HATE KLove. To me, whatever ire any of you have for Clear Channel I reserve completely for KLove. Clear Channel doesn't eliminate entire stations for the purpose of airing their broadcasts 24/7 via satellite (Sacramento, not Denver, FYI). They single handedly, in my opinion, have killed Contemporary Christian as a viable format. There are exceptions, but they are not the rule.

Oh, and since we're on the topic of KLove and I'm on my soapbox and dribbling venom, here's a little of inside info: their Pledge Drive starts tomorrow. They say that they need so much money per half year to exist. It's a lie. Truth is that they only need about 70% of their "budget" to sustain their current stations. Almost one third of their "budget" is for expansion. The KLove Cookie-Cutter blazes across America.

So that's why I heard Mike Novak on the air when I was in town last week. That splains it.

I'm not sure it's bad either. I for one listen to country a lot more than I used to because of the lyrics. I am of the opinon that country is where all of the really good songwriters have gone. Your average country fan bleeds red, white and blue, and there is a relationship there with Christian values.

I think they may be on to something. I just wonder what numbers they expect, if any. Too bad Keith Green's not with us any longer, His music would have fit in well.

It will be interesting to watch.

I and some others tried to program a CCM station (1480) in the 79-80 era. We had support from everyone except management.

That same management can be found in a new high powered dollar a holler station around these parts...

Sigh.

Out of all the former CCM stations Memphis has had, WMQM is the biggest embarrassment of them all in what they became.

Most of the locally owned CCM stations in Memphis had good music, but on all of them the owners depended too much on programs (In some cases very bad programming, especially after WCRV ended up most of the good programs) to keep going. I wish that someone could have done a good local all music CCM station, but it never happened. K-LOVE is the only way that has ever happened. I'm happy there are finally all music CCM stations in Memphis and West TN, but I still miss local CCM radio, even with the problems they had.<P ID="edit"><FONT class="small">Edited by ccmfan on 10/19/05 03:43 AM.</FONT></P>
