Interesting KIOL/KISS note

Friday evening, I was driving on the north side of Houston and was picking up KISS, San Antonio (yes, the best rocker in Texas) like a local!

It was coming in clearer than KIOL. I guess God worked a miracle for Easter weekend.

Up in Austin, with KISS tweaking its signal coverage, it is coming in clearer, more often.

Unfortunately, KIOL is the same old crap.
Then again, so is KISS--but it's the same old music listeners want to hear, which is why it bills incredibly well and has stuck around in SA's top 3 in radio ratings.
Just goes to show you what KIOL should be doing.

But I'll shut up--I'm bringing this up for the umpteenth million time, I know.

Driving back into Austin this afternoon (Sunday), I had no such luck getting KISS.

And it comes in "like a local" in Houston? So the atmospheric conditions enable signals to carry better west to east and that is why KIOL and all the rimshots on the east side have a problem covering the west side of Houston?

I actually posted this on the S.A. board. He is right. I haven't heard KISS/San Antonio here in Houston ever, that I can recall. However night before last, KISS was coming in crystal clear on 99.5 for some time. I wish I had a meter to measure the actual strength of the signal we were getting. Usually, Gator 99.5 out of Lake Charles is the dominant DX for us. KISS had them, and everyone else, completely blown away.<P ID="signature">______________

Sometimes on a good crisp morning, I can pull in a faint KISS signal here in the Clear Lake Area..

KISS, along with several other SA stations, can put in pretty good signals into the Houston area when the tropo conditions are right, often effecting the locals here. Quite vulnerable is KLDE, which can get shredded by KXTN. KTWL regularly gets pounded by KSMG. And if you have a selective tuner, you can often hear the SA stations on 97.3, 101.9, 102.7, and 106.7.

We'll hear more such reception as we move into the hot humid summer months.

With only slight enhancement from the I-35 Corridor SA to Austin, KISS 99.5 has long been a strong station in The Galleria area. Also under same conditions KBPA 103.5 "Bob" nearly wipes out KIOL, KSMG 105.3; KSTX 89.1 NPR Radio and KAJA 97.3 are all strong local like stations. KSMG used to come in faintly before KTWL was on the air as does KBPA 103.5 today under normal conditions. Heard when conditions from the west are fairly strong enhancement are KCOR 95.1; KZEP 104.5 and KELZ 106.7. There are others like KXTN 107.5 that have been heard under very strong tropo conditions, but thry are a rarity in my locale.

They are supposed to be...but yesterday I could have sworn I heard a country song on it too(from the early 80s Urban Cowboy era!!!) Was it "Devil went down to GA" or another one?? and it was at 4pm iirc..I was driving back from Lafayette at the time and caught their ID at the TOH....and then a country song!! EGADS!!..of course RED out of BTR played Old Blue Eyes' "New York, New York" yesterday between two 80s pop hits!! What the hell???

No worries, Jacklover. Sometimes we're not sure what KIOL is, either. ;)

KIOL has a strange signal interruption in the I-10 area coming from Katy...the proximity of the tower explains a lot and the projected signal coverage does as well, but whatever close country station is at 103.7 usually kills KIOL until I get a few miles down the beltway headed north toward 290 and 1960..

I didn't say I had an explanation for why KISS was crystal clear, but for the 30 minutes or so that I could pick it up in Houston, it sounded "like a local."

When I say local, perhaps not as strong as The Buzz...but it was odd nonetheless and I felt it was worth posting on this board.

As it was posted many moons ago on this board, KROX in Austin used to get a decent signal every once in a while.
I don't check the 101.5 frequency in Houston much anymore, but whenever I do, I get nothing but static

As a matter of fact it was!!

Bravo for them. That song is something Billy Ray Cyrus could only DREAM of recording. The video is ten times worse. Pure musical masochism.
