Interesting move by CBS

In San Fran they are going to begin simulcatsing KCBS-AM (News) on sister Classis Hits KFRC-FM on 10/27 - Do you think simulcasting KRLD here on the FM band would work? AND, if so, where would you put it?

98.7 K-LUV (Classic Hits)
100.3 JACK FM
103.7 KVIL (AC)
105.3 KLLI (Talk)
107.5 Movin'

Seems to me that KLLI is the weakest link in the CBS DFW chain. They could move the Jagger Show to JACK and let the rest go. Perhaps that is why they didn't move them to Fitzugh? I'm just sayin...

How would that save money, exactly? Unless you voice-tracked your music station...hey, wait a minute...maybe it would work on the 100.3 freq, and put JACK on the HD-2 channel. But for those of us who don't have HD radios yet, that might not be such a smart move (depending on JACK's ratings).

Maybe a smarter move would be to blow up 105.3 and simulcast KRLD there. As you say, that seems to be the weakest link. But I wouldn't move Jagger to JACK - that format works OK without talkers, IMHO.

SF might just be a test market to see how well simulcasting works. The other question, though, is: What is KCBS-FM's ratings? If they're near the top of the heap, simulcasting might make sense. A middle-of-the-pack station like KRLD, though, may not bring a lot of listeners and might actually dilute the ones they have on AM.

And we all saw how well KEWS worked.....

There is no reason to move KRLD to the FM band when you have a strong ratings driven and money making show on in afternoon drive on KLLI? KRLD should be treated as any other station. Sinks or swims on its own merit.

As for the rest of the KLLI line up? I'm sure they have their eyes on talent in this and other markets. All PD's do that at all times because you never know what might happen. But hey, the Summer book came out last Thursday and I havent given it a good look as yet. Numbers could be up.

Would it surprise me if some sort of move like this ever happened? No, because there are plenty of stupid people out there in high positions who love to jack with radio stations if only to justify their positions.

The problem with this move by CBS In San Francisco is that the 106.9 transmitter (which is in Marin County)while good in the northbay is rather spotty in the southbay San Jose area. KLIV in San Jose will get the listeners if KCBS AM 740 goes to just FM only which would be a really bad move by CBS. So the similcast looks to be a long term move.

If CBS wanted to do something like this, I wouldn't make it a full simulcast. When KRLD does a news block (morning and afternoon) they could simulcast. Otherwise, I'd keep doing all-news on the FM side when KRLD does talk or sports. CBS would have a full-time all-news station but without having to pay for morning and afternoon drive for JUST that station. You could call it KRLD-FM to make cross-promotion and simulcasting easier.

Ratings driven? They're out of the top 20 12+ and only 16th 25-54.

Down 12+. Now, they could be up 25-54 and down 12+, but it's not likely.

I've heard news on KLUV with a referrence to KRLD.

25-54 they are down from 12th to 16th.

Spring Rank - Summer Rank
1 - 1 KESS
8 - 2 KKDA-FM
2 - 3 KLNO
6 - 4 KLTY
3 - 4 KTCK
14 - 6 KDMX
7 - 7 KHKS
4 - 7 KVIL
18 - 9 KBFB
10 - 9 KSOC
9 - 11 KRNB
17 - 11 KJKK
12 - 13 KPLX
23 - 14 KDGE
16 - 14 KSCS

10 -18 WBAP
14 - 20 KEGL
18 - 20 KESN
20 - 20 KZPS

All News on 105.3 is not a bad idea. That might be a bottom that is set on a preset on the FM dial when you want ot hear news. As far as KEWS, that station sounded good. It might ahve been a litle bit ahead of its time. I think now in this day and age , it might work. I am still wondering what talent on 105.3 the earlier post was talking about. There is not talent there.

Either all news or Alt. would do well on that frequency...
