Interesting move by Cumulus

Cumulus is picking up a translator licenced to Riverdale on 97.9fm with the "intent" on simlucasting WNNX Rock 100.5 The translator was tested recently with dead air but is currently off the air. Along with the application to get FCC approval to buy the signal, an application has be filed to upgrade this translator to 250 watts and move it to the 92.9/99.7/101.5 tower. I am not sure why 100.5 would need a translator on 92.9/99.7/101.5 transmitter.
I am going to predict that 680 will end up simlucasting on this signal so it can have better/clearer coverage in the market.

Cumulus wants to give 105.5 WZBN Camilla-Albany GA to Extreme Media in exchange for this translator

Simulcasting 100.5 from the Richland site would make absolutely no sense.

Maybe Cumulus wants the translator for a future purpose. But keep in mind 680 is not owned by Cumulus; it's owned by Dickey Broadcasting. They are not the same company.

Interesting indeed. Why in the world would they want a translator on the south side for Rock 100.5?

They are planning on moving the 97.9 translator to the Richland tower site so it will not really cover the southside after the move.

pretty smart if they can pull it all off...because the fcc is allowing translators to rebroadcast an HD2 or HD3 channel.

I guess I won't hear 97.9 WIBB out of Macon anymore over here on the Eastside. They've been bleeding into the Stone Mountain/Lithonia area for so long. Sometimes, even in crystal clear FM stereo. 97.9 THE WIZ(WIIZ-FM) out of Blackville,SC/Augusta,GA sometimes makes its way over on this side of town after dark too.

Two words: Yeah, c'mon!

What is your daughter's take on this?

Some random thoughts regarding this move....

Perhaps the will put the Fan 4 on there?

They are hoping people looking for the River will accidentally find their frequency as Jordan Graye secretly prays.

To fulfill their promise of syndicating TRG?

This board is getting pretty boring when this is big news!!!

And of course...

Really how does this effect q100?

We should also mention that we're taking the first comment as fact. Could they possibly have something other than simulcasting a previously existing station in mind?

Here's one I'm surprised nobody has brought up. Remember what they are doing in Harrisburg (repeating an HD-2 of theirs on a translator).

They did say they wanted to repeat 100.5.

I'm not in Atlanta, but I do believe that, at this time, there is nothing on 100.5's HD-2. Could they, in effect, intend to repeat a 100.5 HD-2 on this new translator??

I did forget about 99X on 99.7 HD-2, maybe that is the answer.

That makes the most sense of any idea yet put forth...moreso than The Fan XIII. Will Inside Your Head make a return to these boards?

Neil: Unlike The Fish, TRG isn't safe for the whole family, so my daughter doesn't get to listen. Besides, she wants to listen to Radio Disney 24/7 anyway, so it all works out.

Sometimes TRG isn't safe for the Manson Family!

I don't listen at all to them. I am so sick of Steve taliking about his sexual escapades. I think he is not that attractive anyway. :p

It's sort of disheartening when a 250 watt FM translator covers more people than a 10,000 watt nighttime AM on a good frequency like 680 but it's the nature of the beast. We've put FM translators on a couple of our weak AM stations and it's brought new life to them. We've got translators where we have some really popular and strong AM stations, audience and revenue...but I'm afraid to put the AMs on the FM translators for fear the audience will leave the AMs. Why kill something that works...but we're in unrated small towns and our audience is more forgiving of the weak AM nighttime signals.

Smart move by Cumulus. The value of FM translators in the Atlanta metro just increased.

Yeah, no one's really mentioned what I find most interesting about this deal. A 250 watt translator in Atlanta is worth more to Cumulus than a fully licensed and protected 6000 watt FM in Albany. Cumulus will have no security over this investment because that 250 watt translator could be forced off the air at any time if another station upgrades or changes their tower location, which seems to happen about once a month in north Georgia.

I also see Cumulus putting the old 99x HD-2 signal on this translator as the most logical move. 99x on a 250 watt translator would probably get about the same ratings it had on it's old 100kw signal.

I wonder if Cumulus was loosing money hand over fist with WZBN and just couldn't turn it around with a secular format? Was WZBN already for sale before this deal appeared?

As a 99x.com listener, i warmly embrace this idea. One can hope.
