Interesting negotiating ploy

WEEI has "locked out" Dennis and Callahan according to the Herald. Isn't the purpose of a lockout to put pressure on those who are being locked out? If this is so, why is that giggling goon, Larry Johnson filling in? I can't see them being threatened by him. If they had Neumy or Steve Burton, or virtually anyone else who doesn't sound like a sissy, sitting in, I could see them being anxious to wrap up a deal.

What am I missing?

i think we're being play imo- perhaps it's an attempt to bring the boys over to WRKO after things settle down?

the howie lawsuit has to get resolved first before they can introduce them as replacements. they'll sure make better lead-ins to sox games than the krespe kream boy. they'll also clean jay's clock free of charge. brilliant! brilliant! if wrko could trade away the fine idiot #1 and fein idiot #2, the world would be a happy place again.

If they can come to terms, D&C in the afternoon would be interesting--but consider this: why would
Entercom put a (mostly) sports show on RIGHT opposite their hugely successful Big Show on EEI?
Howie is off today; he orig. said it was "jury duty" but said "it's something else" yesterday...I'm speculating
that maybe today is a day when some legal negotiations are going on.

A post on boston-radio-interest said it was overheard in the Fenway media room that Dennis would
leave WEEI if he winds up getting locked out of the radiothon. We'll have to see if that's just what happens
Thu & Fri.

Never said the boys would take Howie's slot :) but if they move things around there's plenty of possibilities!

Actually I was responding to radiodouble, who said...

because D&C isn't always a sports show... at least compared to other shows on the station. It would seem odd to have it compete with the Big Show. What other options do Dennis and/or Callahan have for radio?

Not very many. Of the options presented, none seem to make much sense when you really look into them.

Late mornings on WTKK wouldn't seem to be viable. It would give WTKK a payroll equivalent to 60% of current billing, figuring 1.5 mil for Carr, 1 mil for Severin, and close to 2 mil for D&C, plus Graham, Eagan and Broude. They would never come close to equaling their current audience (because the bodies just aren't there), couldn't command their current premium ad rate which makes them worth the money, and would be up against Dale and Holley, who are kicking midday butt in the numbers with the sports crowd. And, D&C is still 80% sports based, not exactly WTKK long suit.

I guess they could go to WBCN, but that would entail O&A going away from mornings, and the listener response to WBCN electively canning O&A for D&C would make the mouthbreathers at SaveWRKO come across as the Yale Debating Team. Plus, how much better could they do than O&A to justify the added expense. Still, this one makes more sense than any of the others.

The idea that they'd go to some vague FM regional startup, just more cannon fodder for WEEI's net, is just a non-starter, from a lot of perspectives, from individual egos to money.

Re-signing them and then moving them to PMD on WRKO seems to make the least sense of all. You forfeit their billing power right off the bat, plunk sports talk (or, more precisely, 'guy talk") into an issue oriented line-up, and leave WEEI trying to find a replacement for a morning show with killer numbers and killer billing. And, as Rac mentioned, it would put them up against The Big Show. Why? What would possibly be gained?

I still believe that D&C will stay with WEEI. The current 'lockout' would seem to be a pretty good move. Force the issue before you get into the important Fall book rather than be left holding the bag in the middle of September and trying to play catch up with new talent.

I don't read a whole lot into the current collection of fill-ins, because August is a typical throwaway month for radio - but, my gawd, Mustard and Johnson? Gives a whole new dimension to the expression 'throwaway.'

If I've misread any tea leaves here, please let me know. Could make for an interesting discussion

Regards,
TSB

Don't forget: this is the same management that dreamed up that 'Mike Adams has locked himself in the studio' gag. Priceless, I tell you. Priceless! ::)

can't imagine what they'll come up with when the fat o's contract talks stall next year?

Boston Sports Media says they've gotten emails supposedly from a source at Entercom (JW? JK?
HC?) saying that Dumbass and Callousman are each demanding $1M to $1.5M...

Is it possible that Wolfe figures that if they don't come back for whatever he can offer that he's planning on getting Boomer and Carlton(?) on syndie in the morning?

doubt anyone in the sneaker building would be e-mailing bloggers from their work e-mail.
like everywhere else, they heavily monitor e-mail traffic over there especially with what's going on over there.
even if they're logging into their private e-mail accounts at work, they'll still get bagged. anyone who'd be
doing this either got nothing to lose or just an idiot.

anyone can get private/fake e-mail addresses. just because they claim who they're doesn't mean they work at weei or have first-hand knowledge of the salary structure in the place.

It was even more original thirty years ago when Dwayne Ingalls Glasscock locked himself in the studio at BCN' over the troy ounce of gold promotion.

Yes, but then Duane was a parody of the dumb things jocks do, wasn't he? I don't think the same can be said of Mike Adams or WEEI.
