Interesting night on the AM band here

Here in Tampa, WSM is virtually buried completely by a Spanish speaking station which I don't know where it's from.

WWL too is almost completely buried by Radio Reloj. Can barely hear that they are in the background and they are by far the biggest distant powerhouse.

And on 710, which always sounds like the battle of the stations between Miami and Cuba with the echo effect, one station is completely dominating.

Never heard anything like this. :)

And I was ready to give up nighttime AM DXing until the fall.

Yep the propagation alerts called for "Blackouts" which tells me interesting things happen. When I hear a local station getting "fuzzy" I stick around and wait for the surprises. They're fascinating!

The echo effect is caused by the existence of a great many transmitters all transmitting on 710 all over Cuba (making it impossible to listen to Radio Mambi). The audio to the various transmitters is not perfectly synchronized.

Your Spanish-speaker on 650 was likely Colombia. One night many years ago, I tried to demonstrate to a relative up here (Michigan) that one could listen to WSM at night - but there was an aurora that evening, and we heard Colombia instead!

Things seem to be back to normal...although some of my normals are really darn good, this evening. :)

Shortwave bands were also affected, by the latest solar activity, though today's conditions were better than yesterday.
