Interesting, Old Articles

I found some very interesting, old articles on the web about WNEW and generally about "rock n' roll radio's" good old days. Basically articles decribing the rise and fall of rock n' roll radio and radio in general. Its good reading:

and also check out

Richard Neer makes lots of comments in the article and its just interesting to read.

A few snippets from the "How to Kill a Radio Station" article (second link)

"WNEW-FM once ruled as the nation's premier rock station, boasting an influence that extended far beyond its Manhattan-based signal.

'NEW was rock 'n' roll: John Lennon stopped by to spin records, the Grateful Dead played cards in the studio, and new music from the Rolling Stones to the Ramones to the Replacements was championed."

It also had few listeners, was conceived at a time when FM was still considered near-worthless (1967) and perhaps most important, was owned by Merv Griffin's MetroMedia -who was known for keeping a hands-off style as long as there were decent earnings. Once an FM toppled WABC (WKTU in '78) it was inevitable that the free-wheeling days of FM were over. I recall reading of a poster in some FM saying: The age of Aquarius is over, now it's time to kick ass".

If you want genuine free form, it still exists on WFUV and WFMU and you don't have to put up with Madison ave's garbage.
