Interesting Report On Carolina Radio

Internet research company CAROLINA PROFILE released its JANUARY 2007 report, which investigates how closely NORTH and SOUTH CAROLINA radio stations have connected with their audiences via MYSPACE. The profiles of 55 radio stations were researched and parsed, and the entire report is online and available free of charge at www.CarolinaProfile.com.

Here’s a glimpse at some of the rankings:

Most MYSPACE Network Members In NORTH CAROLINA

1. WQOK/RALEIGH
2. Surfside 1640 Digital Radio, MYRTLE BEACH (Solomon Radio Partners)
3. Ace & TJ, Syndicated
4. WDCG/RALEIGH
5. WKNC/RALEIGH

Most MYSPACE Network Members In SOUTH CAROLINA

1. Surfside 1640 Digital Radio, MYRTLE BEACH (Solomon Radio Partners)
2. WFBC/GREENVILLE
3. WIHB/CHARLESTON
4. WUSC/COLUMBIA
5. Morning Rush, WNOK/COLUMBIA

For more info, contact RICK DAVIS at [email protected].

Isn't it interesting that Dave Solomon's internet radio is at the top of the list & yet he is involved with this supposed company. If you'll notice that some of the reports off this website come from HIS wzfb.com website. Oh, and by the way, as an internet guru, this company's website is a sub-domain of wzfb.com. Way to go Dave! Now, do you have any other biased reports that you'd like to share with us???

It's an interesting report and nice to throw around. No sure how much it "means" though. How does he determine which profiles are from South Carolina residents? Not everyone updates their location in their profile. If you split time between SC and some other place, like I do, how are you accounted for?

It would be interesting if there were a correlation with listening. Not sure there is one, given that not everyone has high speed (or even slow speed) access.

Radiokingsc brings up a valid point. It is true that one of the SRP companies owns the WZFB domain. We lease subdomains to companies all over the country with the WZFB domain. Rick's Carolina Profile site resides on our server. However, if you doubt the accuracy or fairness in the study, I suggest that you visit each profile (they link to all of them) and count the profiles who are in SC & NC or fall into particular demographics. The report studied 55 radio stations and simply posted the results- no matter how well Surfside 1640 did- on the site.

When in doubt, count em out.

Not calling into question the character of anyone. I am not sure just looking at the stated information on the profiles is really reliable. Locations, ages, etc. listed on a profile are generally not very reliable, in my experience. The results are what they are, but I'm not sure you'd want to rely on the report.

No Dudefan- nothing like that is assumed.

The quality of the information on profiles is only as reliable as the person(s) who filled them out. This is true.

But isn't any report/survey prone to a margin of error due to the quality of the information given by the sample?

My experience with Arbitron raises a lot of these same questions- lol.

Our performance in the report aside, I am not sure what it represents either. Other than maybe a statement of who are friends "say they are" at a given time. I am sure everyone is familiar with MySpace horror stories. People are not always what they seem.

We try hard to be sure the people in our listener network are real people. Spammers/crazies may occassionally slip in- but we try to remove them as quickly as we can.

Disagree with whether Arbitron's extrapolations necessarily reflect reality, the Arbitron surveys are statistically reliable and reproducable. Simply looking at what people say on their Myspace profile is not.

You are welcome to disagree. My point is how can you trust people to tell the truth in one media but not another? Why would they more apt to tell the truth in an Arbitron diary? Experts for years have been telling us the same thing about the reliability of Arbitron for decades- so much so that Arbitron is changing their entire process to the portable people meter- abandoning the diary method forever.

Nevertheless, it is what it is. A snapshot of what the profiles of Carolina people are telling us. They don't claim to make the report more than it is. However, this is just one factor in a decision that requires many.

It is just one of many ways to learn about Carolina radio stations. Nothing more.

Surfside, just speaking for G-SP, Rick has missed a few. I know of at least 5 stations in our market working the Myspace. I'm sure there's more in those other markets as well. Not to mention the morning & specialty shows that likely have their own. It's great for free marketing and networking but we never mention it on the air. Everything we do on-air is geared to drive traffic through our own site.

Craig

Send any MySpace address for stations who would like to be included in the Feb survey and future surveys to Rick at [email protected]. I know he added at least one yesterday. GSP does look a little slim with just FBC on there.

He's pretty good at getting them added to the database.

Yeah, along with 53,000 other domains. Coincidence?? :)
