Noticed at 6:53pm yesterday that KLUV & KZPS each were playing "Alright Now" by Free. KLUV being a few seconds ahead of KZPS. ZPS playing a longer version. Interesting when that happens. I recall hearing (KLIF & KXOL, I believe) playing "On The Cover Of The Rolling Stone" at the same time, once, back when that was on the charts.

Whats interesting is that the only other time you can recall it happening is when Dr. Hook was relevant.

Spend any time listening to -

KVIL, KMDX, KHKS, KLIF FM, KPLX, KSCS, KLUV, KZPS, KEGL, KEDG, and you hear song duplication almost daily. Sorry no mention of Hispanic or Urban - not in my wheelhouse - but pretty sure they duplicate as well.

And if you throw commercials into the mix and there is duplication every 15minutes - nails on chalkboard mattress lady has logged more on air hours than Ron Chapman.

Good point about commercials. At least since the late 90's, I've found that most of the music stations, of all formats, run their spots at the same time. Often, the only hope for hearing a song while that is happening is non-commercial KEOM.

If it's the one I'm thinking about, her speech pattern is very similar to that of "Dora the Explorer."

But she is the "President" of Sleep Experts ;D
And if you were the AE of her account you would think her voice is better than Addelle.

Agree. There's much song duplication. Just that I don't catch the same song at the same time on more than one station very often. Thought the old Dr. Hook example was fun.

My nominee for most over played commercial is "One hour heatin' & air con-ditionin'." I believe that they're "always own tyme or yew don't pay uh dime." ;D

I was once listening to KZPS when they played Jimmy Buffett's Margaritaville. Not exactly one of my favorites so I went over to KLUV. Crap. Once again, Margaritaville. So, I move over to Platinum. You guessed it, same damn song on three stations, although obviously at different stages of play.

With my luck I probably would have grabbed Jimmy Buffett's greatest hits!!!
Isn't that strange, tho?? I have never liked Margaritaville, yet I love everything else Buffett has done. Come Monday is super. This is somewhat similar to Roy Orbison. For me, Oh, Pretty Woman is an automatic tune-out. But I'm nuts about everything else he ever recorded. I realize Pretty Woman always tests well and all that, but I could name at least 10 Roy Orbison songs that are all far superior to Pretty Woman.

I am on the same page as you with Roy Orbison! I think "Pretty Woman" is his worst song, but probably his biggest success. Everything else I make a point to stop to listen to whenever or wherever I'm listneing.

This reminds me of a fun bit a couple radio buddies and I did back in the early 80's.

I was on KVIL at 11:00 at night and my buddy Al Forguson who was doing nights at KMGC (102.) called and while he and I were talking, Mike Roberts over at KNUS (98.7) also called. We had a conference thing on the control room phone and so I conferenced all 3 of us together and we decided to see if anyone would notice if we all played the exact same song at the exact same song. We started going down the list of currents and realized we all 3 had Kim Carnes "More Love" in rotation, so we backtimed perfectly and counted down, "3, 2, 1, hit it!" and all started the song at the exact same time.

It was so funny watching the phones blow up with people saying, "heyyy, you're not going to believe this but....you guy, Magic and K-News are all playing the same song right now..."

Little did they know!

..good times, good times.

You wacky djs!! But on a serious note. Steve, I know I speak for both of us in saying how much I miss Al Forguson. Great jock, great production and one of the goofiest, funniest people I ever worked with. He was taken from this ole world way too damn soon. He was what? 45 or 46? Come to think of it, we've lost a lot of guys from the KLUV days of the late 1980s. Besides Al, also Hubcap Carter, Paul Medina, Art Roberts, and Ben Laurie. And Ron McAlister remains in a nursing home. He's not well. All of them wonderful talents and super friends.

My friend, who was working at Q-102 at the time doing overnights, called his friend at the Zoo and ALL NIGHT LONG they played the same songs at least 3 hours worth. This also was in the mid 80's

Al was a great friend... we worked together in Sherman at KIK'M 910 am in the 70's.
I will never forget when he walked in to ask for a job. He was from Denison and a student (an older student) at NTSU in Denton. He gave the PD the tape and resume and said, "I am a big fan of the station and would like to do anything you have an opening for, just give me a chance." He left and the PD, who shared an office with me, said, "...now Steve, that's a way to get a job. I'll find something for him." He did. Al started weekends and ended up at night following me. He also did the local news on my PM drive shift. We had so many good laughs!
When I left and went to KVIL, Al moved to afternoons and ended up going to KMGC where he did nights for a good while then moved over to KLUV with us....He left and went to Boston and then Tampa. He won the state lottery and bought a nice boat. He was out in the Gulf when he had a heart attack in his early 50's in 1999. He smoked all his life. I remember telling him that stuff would kill you and he looked at me and said "I don't care."

Awesome stories. Those happened back in the tip-top of my listening days (i.e. back before I was old enough to drive) when music radio wasn't nearly as fragmented.

Rare is the hit these days that crosses formats, but those songs tend to be overplayed ad nauseum: Adele is the most recent artist, but Foster the People and Neon Trees spring to mind in the last year.

Wow, I've done a two-way a few times, but never a three-way! That's amazing!!! :D
