International CHR, anyone?

I'm really interested in international radio, for some reason much more than American radio. Maybe it's because, in my opinion, when you've heard a few American CHRs you've heard them all, at least musically. I know this isn't really true, but sometimes I feel that way.

With that said, I'm pretty much tuned into international radio throughout the day and only occasionally give American CHR listens.

I love the stations from London and cycle through them regularly -- Capital, Kiss and even XFM. People in England naturally complain about their own radio, but I find the music diverse especially on Kiss, the jocks well informed and slick, and the presentation pretty good. Capital, while a CHR, plays not only American top 40 but also British and some European stuff which I love. it adds a bit of flavor to the usual songs you might listen to on an average American station, and I really appreciate that.

With that said, I'm looking for others outside of London. I like Metropolitana out of Brazil, which has a nice range of American and foreign music.

Are there others? Preferably, they would be music intensive ... are there any good popular English CHRs abroad? Metropolitana, for instance, has great music; but when they start talking a lot, I get bored quickly because I can't understand the language. That’s also why I like Kiss out of London, because they are very music-intensive and never waffle, even though they have great jocks. That station can bust out song after song; it’s nice to listen to.

So If anyone has any good suggestions for international popular radio, I'd love to get some recommendations. What’s popular; what’s not? I’m really, really curious about this type of stuff.

Also, how popular are jocks in international markets, and are they held to the same regard as some American ones? For example, many CHRs here have famous, popular, or even controversial jocks which often tend to carry the station. Is it the same around the world? For example, Kiss100 had the famous, controversial and highly irreverent Bambam breakfast which was well received by youth around London until they were fired, but is it the same in other markets?

I'm sorry If these questions are stupid or ignorant.

This thread is right up my alley, as I'm the residential expert on international CHRs. Are there any countries in particular you're interested in? I could just start talking a mouthful when it comes to foreign radio. Think of some countries and I'll give a list of all their streaming CHRs. In the meantime, I'll leave you with a list of CHR radio stations from down under (the Nova stations are my favorite of the bunch):

PS what you said about American CHRs is true - it's a lot harder to tell them apart then it used to be (which is both good and bad), but there are still some unique sounding CHRs out there.

Thanks. I guess I'm not looking for specific countries as much as personal thoughts and opinions on what sounds good or what is popular. I found a station in Mexico city called Alfa Radio, and I really wasn't very impressed -- so I guess I'm just looking for general thoughts or recommendations.

Nova 96.9 sounds really good.

Also, it kind of seems like there are a lot more stations in other cities around the world than here. Most cities have only one CHR or popular or youth-leaning station here, though some do have competing stations. for example I googled fm radio in Brazil, and there must have been five or six radio stations in some of the major cities that were listed as pop and rock. How do they all survive?

It is a mystery to me at times how some markets have so many CHRs on the radio. Sometimes it may mean other formats may be missing from the dial, or that it's the dominant sound with younger audiences in some countries. The cost of operation may also be lower, there's really kinds of factors to consider.
Anyways, I'd hate to just bombard you with a looong list of recommended stations, or list of all the countries. That's why I asked you if you have some specific countries in mind as obviously you're not going to have the time to listen to too many stations at the same time. Besides, if I only recommend certain stations you might be missing out on others that you may find to be appealing.
Take Holland for example, my favorite CHR there is Slam FM, which leans Dance, there's Radio 538 which is the most popular CHR there, and Wild FM is the most American sounding CHR musically. You might like them all.

I love the stations that charles mentioned,,, The NOVA stations just rock,,, best CHRs possibly in the world, but I think in a country as big as the US with different time zones, cultures, and demos that localization is needed,, but why not have State Wide simulcast,,, I dont see a problem with that.. Id love to have something like the Nova stations over here,,, I hope they stream in HQ soon... Z-1035 in Toronto, and Slam FM are also my favorite CHRs... 538 is good, but alot of talk in Dutch which bugs me cause I cant understand it,,, they were better back in the 90s and early 00 before Slam FM stole the youth audience.. Radio Deejay in Italy and also Radio Planet fm are good International Italian CHRs to check out,,, mix of American and Euro POP...

http://www.radioplanet.it/

http://www.deejay.it/

Also,, the BFBS is a great millitary station,, its just like BBC 1 but without all the talk..

Check out Chrles streams, as well as the two i posted, I think you will like them..

hmm. Anything good in the Philippines, or maybe in Austria or Latvia? Anything good in Spain? I'll actually be in Peru later this year -- anything worth listening to there?

Thx for your comments Clubber :)
I'm in the middle of watching 7 Pounds with Will Smith, but I can post the streams for CHRs in all the countries BS1012 has requested. For now here's the Austrian ones. Krone Hit has improved significantly as it used to be a lot more Adult leaning, it covers pretty much all of Austria. The Energy stations can currently be hard in Vienna and Innsburck, and Energy just received a license to operate a station in Salzburg so expect that to happen soon. My favorite CHR in Austria is the Welle 1 station that can be heard in Salzburg and Linz.

Spain has Los 40 Principles amoung others for CHR,,, also a good Dance station, Loca FM all over Spain.

In Riga lativa definately check out Capital FM 101.1........ it leans adult at night, but its really a Dance and rhythmic friendly Hot AC..... good station...

http://www.capitalfm.lv/

and if your in Manilla or Cebu Phillipenes check out Y-101 They are a CHR,, but also play a great deal of 80s new wave, which never died in the Phillipenes.. I dont think they stream anymore though... CHRLES would know.

Y-101 still webcasts, but can only be heard in the Cebu area. CHR radio has been around in the Philippines for a long time, and Manilla is the only city in Asia to have its own Hip Hop leaning station with Wave 89.1. My favorite station there rght now is 103.5 Max FM, which is a very hot CHR by day, and goes Dance every night starting at 9 PM (Manilla time). Some of the best CHRs in the country dont currently webcast, such as 105.9 Mix FM Davao. Anyways, the CHR list from the Philippines looks like this:

MAGIC 89.9 MANILLA 31 K

MONSTER RADIO RX 93.1 MANILLA 48 K

103.5 MAX FM MANILLA 48 K

Good grief! I counted six for Manila ... wow.
Thank you very much; I'll give them all a try. this is great.
SLAM seems really nice.

Glad you're enjoying the lists. Onto Spain, where it seems most CHRs shy away from English language Hip Hop and R&B, unlerss you're in the tourist resort areas. My favorite station there is Flaix FM while Los 40 is the biggest station.

BTW, it seems like Styl FM, which can be heard in Barcelona has improved. They play some good Spanish Pop alongside Kelly Clarkson, Ciara's "Love Sex Magic", even the brand new one from David Guetta featuring Kelly Rowland titled "Love Takes Over".
Okay, so another country you were curious about was Latvia. Here are the CHRs from there, including European Hit Radio:

EUROPEAN HIT RADIO ALL OVER LATVIA FREQUENCIES 56 K Copy & Paste into Winamp

EUROPA PLUS 103.2 FM RIGA 128 K

Okay, so here is another question.

Some of these stations have the same names ... but for different areas. I'm just beginning to dive into this stuff, but of course Nova is not only in Sydney but other cities, and I know there is a los 40 in Mexico but you have them in Spain as well. I've heard of the NRJ brand in France, but someone told me NRJ is in other countries as well around Europe.

Do these stations share similar music / personalities / sound very similar, or are they completely different to fit each market?

For example, here in the states you have many, many stations under the name Kiss, but most of them don't have the same jocks and despite having similar playlists they usually share few similarities. Like Z-100 New York really has nothing to do with Z-107.5 Wilmington North Carolina.

Very interesting stuff.

Short answer,,NO,, they are all programmed seperately in the different countrys for the NRJ network,,, for instance, the ones in Germany are not the same as the French ones... The Nova stations are programed locally for their region and have similar, but not identical playlists... Chrles can give you way more insight on this.. But in some countrys like Russia,, their CHR Europa Plus is the same simulcast across Russia,, but not the same as the Europa Plus stations in Ukraine,,, Kazkakistan ETC.....

There were a few CHR's in Singapore that I enjoyed. Not sure if they still exist, since I was there in 2006.

There was one at 98.7FM. Try www.987fm.sg

Another one called 'Class 95'.

and another one '91.3 KRZ', but on my second visit later in 2006 they had shifted more towards AC.

In England, outside of London, Invicta FM

In Ireland, Spin FM, FM 104, Today FM to name a few.

In Singapore the FM dial is very crowded as one can also pick up stations from Malaysia and Indonesia. The are three local CHRs in Signapore are with Radio 91.3 being my favorite though at this time their streams cannot be heard in the US:

98.7 FM SINGAPORE 16 K

POWER 98 SINGAPORE 20 K

RADIO 91.3 SINGAPORE 20 K

As for Ireland, you've got:

SPIN 103.8 DUBLIN 24 K

FM 104 DUBLIN 64 K AAC

I 105-107 FM DUBLIN-MIDLANDS-NORTHEAST REGION 64 K

I 102-104 FM GALWAY REGION 64 K (Press Play In Pop-Up Player)

SPIN SOUTHWEST 102-103 & 94.7 FM SOUTH-WEST REGION 32 K

RED FM 104-106 FM CORK (Retro Leaning in Overnights) 64 K

BEAT 102-103 SOUTH-EAST REGION (Rhythmic Friendly) 32 K

2 FM 90-92 FM ALL OVER IRELAND (State-Owned Pop Station) FREQUENCIES 56 K

TODAY FM 100-102 FM ALL OVER IRELAND (Eclectic In Overnights) 32 K

Red fm is my fav Legal station in Ireland,, the only one that still plays Dance and Hip Hp... I dont care fopr the new sound of 91.3 Singapoor,, it used to be dance heavy.
