International Stations Now Restricted on TuneIn

I'm having trouble getting hawaii radio stations on my android phone!

I was trying to add some Hawaiian radio stations to my phone, but I've found that some of them have been geofenced to Hawaii only. This is due to the coronavirus situation. I believe that it's probably because of the streaming royalties for the music played on each station. A lot of radio stations don't stream outside their country or territory for either of these 2 reasons.

And a growing number do not stream outside their metro area as well. There is no real gain in streaming to other areas unless the station is one of the few with a wider recognition factor and a large streaming audience that can be monetized.

As far as international stations, one of the big issues for music is the lack of reciprocity when foreign countries play US recordings. That's in response to AM/FM in the US not required to pay label royalties.

I notice talk stations are finally starting to stream hyper-local ads. For instance I'm listening to an LA station and I'm hearing an ad for a business a quarter mile from my house. Seems to me it's the smart way to monetize streaming outside the immediate service area. Good for the content providers and great for the listeners. This is a recent development and I hope it's successful.

Using the location of the users ISP to target local or regional ads has been done for quite a few years. It depends on whether the particular station has a sales aggregator who activates this process.

Yeah, I used to get repetitive ads for bricks and mortar businesses 50 miles away. Useless. It's much better just lately.
